What is family medicine? Most specialties define themselves by exclusion or limitations, such as age, sex, body organ or system. Family medicine does not limit it self. It is a specialty of inclusion. The focus in family medicine is on the patient and not on the disease.

As a member of the community, the family physician is able to respond to people’s changing needs, to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and to mobilize appropriate resources to address patients’ needs. They use referral to specialists and community resources judiciously.
