INTRODUCTION Since the early to mid 1980s much of the effort in power system analysis has turned away from the methodology of formal fields of operation research and control theory n numerical analysis to the less rigorous techniques of Artificial Intelligence(AI) Today the main AI techniques are those who utilizing the evolutionary logic of Expert System, Fuzzy Systems, artificial Neural Networks(ANN) and Evolutionary Computing.

EXPERT SYSTEM An expert system captures the knowledge of human expert in a narrow specified domain in a machine implementable form. It utilizes this knowledge to provide decision support at a level comparable to human expert and knowledge. It is capable of justifying its reasoning. It separates interference mechanisms from domain specific knowledge and uses one or more knowledge structures such as production rules , frames , combinations of frames and rules, semantic nets and objects to represent this knowledge

1. Knowledge acquisition The Knowledge acquisition section contains another program which acts to acquire new facts or rules. 2.1- Inference Engine Inference engine is a software that performs inference reasoning tasks for the expert system. There is always some rules which expresses the way in which data is processed, i.e. what knowledge takes precedence in the reasoning procedure. Such knowledge about how the system should work is called meta knowledge. This meta knowledge may also be stored in separate knowledge base rather than be programmed into an inference engine

It may provide graphic facilities, explanation facilities, justification etc. Expert system shell hence is a ready made software which provides the facilities for the user to build his own knowledge base and then utilise this knowledge to solve unlimited number problems in the field of knowledge base.

Conclusion The importance of the use of the AI tools has been felt in all the areas of the Power Systems and the need is emphasized. The easiness in evaluating the vague or non-crisp concepts and the ability of these techniques to learn due to the technological improvement elevated the effect of these soft computing techniques. Moreover there are sufficient scope in the improvement of the various soft-computing techniques to increase their strengths and capability. The tools for the simulation of these conditions also need to be enhanced for their limitations. The application fields combining the conventional and these techniques can remarkably reduce the difficulties faced in the Power Systems design, operation and control.
