The Main Character The Main Character is called Johnny Lance. He is a tall, dark man with broad shoulders. H is face is hard and browned by the South African sun. Jacobus Van Der Byl , who was a rich man, took Johnny in as a child because he was poor and without a family. Now he is one of the directors of the Van Der Byl Diamond Company.
Where And When The Story Takes Place:
Where And When The Story Takes Place The story takes place in two locations: South Africa and London, England. The book doesn’t say when the story happens but it must be in the last seventy years since helicopters, boats with propellers and computers exist only in the last few decades.

The Problem In The Story And Examples The problem in the story is that Van Der Byl Diamond Company has a lot of debts and if the directors don’t pay them up the bank will close down the company. Johnny needs to pay all of the debts himself and he doesn’t have a lot of money. Examples from the story to the problem: Ex.1- “…‘the Van Der Byl Diamond Company is in trouble. There are debts, big debts. And there is very little money left.’ ” Ex.2- “ ‘I, Jacobus Van Der Byl, also make John Rigby Lance personally responsible for all the debts of Van Der Byl Diamonds’ ” Ex.3-“ ‘ Now you have debts of two and a half million rand…’ ‘ But it’s crazy… I haven’t got ten thousand rand!’ ”
The Solution In The Story:
The Solution In The Story The solution in the story is that Johnny finds a place he thinks the diamonds will be at. Benedict (Jacobus Van Der Byl’s son) steals the diamonds because he hates Johnny. Then, Johnny Lance finds the diamonds that Benedict has stolen. He can now save the Van Der Byl Diamond Company.
