What is VoIP? :

What is VoIP? VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol or phone service over the Internet.  VoIP is the transmission of voice over packet-switched networks. VoIP is also known as internet telephony or IP telephony(IPtel) . It also includes video and other media, not just voice.

Slide 3:

VoIP uses packet switching technologies. VoIP is a technology to make telephone calls using a broadband internet connection instead of the regular phone lines. With VoIP, every call you make can be treated as a "local" call .

Why use VoIP? :

Why use VoIP? Lower Cost : phone service via VOIP costs less than equivalent service from traditional sources. Either due to monopolies or government entities. PC to PC calls are completely free whereas PC to a telephone costs you very little.

History of VOIP :

History of VOIP Is VoIP New? No!

Slide 6:

VoIP began in its most primitive forms in 1995. It consisted of a Computer, Special Software, a Sound Card, and a Microphone. In 1996, software called Vocal Tec Internet phone provided VoIP along  with voice mail and Caller ID. VoIP is now becoming a standard technology in the business world.

How VoIP works? :

How VoIP works? Continuously sample audio. Convert each sample to digital form. Send digitized stream across Internet in packets. Convert the stream back to analog for playback. PCM(Pulse code modulation)

VoIP: Packet switching :

VoIP: Packet switching The data packets flow through a random network along thousands of possible paths. This is called packet switching. The sending computer sends the packet to a nearby router and forgets about it. Packet switching routes the packets along the shortest and cheapest lines.

Slide 9:

ATA: Analog telephone adaptor allows you to connect phone to your computer or your Internet connection for use with VoIP . The ATA is an analog-to-digital converter. IP Phone: These specialized phones look just like normal phones with a handset, cradle and buttons. Wi-Fi phones allow subscribing callers to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi hot spot.

Slide 10:

Computer to computer: There are several companies offering free or very low-cost software that you can use for this type of VoIP. e.g. Skype. You don’t even have to pay for these type of calls.

Overview of VoIP :

Slide 12:

IP Telephony Standards: ITU (International Telecommunication Union) IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Signaling protocols: H.323: H323 is a set of standards from the ITU-T It defines a set of protocols to provide audio and visual communication over a computer network.

Slide 13:

SIP: Acronym of session initiation protocol. SIP is an IETF standard. It is much less complex than H.323. The protocol resembles the HTTP protocol, is text based, and very open and flexible. SIP has taken the VOIP world by storm.
