It can be anything except work/school. For example, dancing, playing basketball, cooking, painting, singing, etc. When they are ready, students come up and write the things on the “Our Class Experts" chart Students prepare a speech Students practice speech with partner A few students give speeches to the class each day Implications of the method to the teaching of English in Puerto Rico : Implications of the method to the teaching of English in Puerto Rico The learner-centered instruction: - help students interact - develop oral communication - develop self-esteem Cooperative/ Collaborative Learning : Cooperative/ Collaborative Learning Sample activity of the method : Sample activity of the method Think-Pair-Share - Involves a three step cooperative structure. During the first step individuals think silently about a question posed by the instructor. Individuals pair up during the second step and exchange thoughts. In the third step, the pairs share their responses with other pairs, other teams, or the entire group. Implications of the method to the teaching of English in Puerto Rico : Implications of the method to the teaching of English in Puerto Rico The cooperative/collaborative learning could help our students in: - oral communication skills - developing social skills - promoting self-esteem Interactive Learning : Interactive Learning Sample activity of the method : Sample activity of the method T: John, what’s your favorite movie? S: I like Star Wars. T: Ashley, what about you? S: Well, I like Titanic. T: Now, John, ask Ashley what her favorite sport is. S: What sport you like? T: John, good try. Now say it this way: “ What is your favorite sport? S: What is your favorite sport? -Students already warm up. The teacher then has students pair off, continuing to ask about favorite sports, movies, food, etc. -Teacher then asks the students to make columns on a blank sheet of paper with the headings Sports, Movies, or whatever topic is. -Teacher divide students into group, directs each group to fill in their sheets with the favorites of the other members of the group. -The exercise ends with reports of findings from appointed group leaders. As learners interact with each other through oral and written discourse, their communicative abilities will be enhanced. Whole Language Education : Whole Language Education Sample activity of the method : Sample activity of the method Day 1: Have the students brainstorm categories of personal information, such as "What is your favorite television show?" Enter the information into the database, and print a master form before the next class period. Day 2: Have the students write personal information on the master form. Day 3: Have the students write positive comments about their classmates; these will later become the class description, such as "Megan is artistic." Day 4: Divide class into two groups. Have group A enter personal information into the database. Have group B conduct personal interviews, using the questions on the master form. Day 5: Have group B enter personal information into database while group A conducts interviews. Day 6: Have group A enter their interviews into the word processor. Have group B design their personal book covers. Day 7: Have group B enter their interviews on the computer while group A designs their personal book covers. Day 8: Have the class demonstrate graphs and reports available, using database information; for example, a chart showing the months of students' birthdays. Have the students explain how the reports were developed and how quickly the computer compiles the data. Language Experience Approach : Language Experience Approach Sample activity of the method : Sample activity of the method Child-led Rereading Activities - inviting children to become the teacher and lead other children through parts of the chart, Big Book, etc. by pointing out words they know, or reading aloud specific sections and framing them by sweeping their hand or a pointer along as they read. As you develop many charts and books using the language experience approach, children can choose which chart or book they would like to lead the other students in re-reading.
