In the last one year nearly 24 pharmacies have been robbed in the Sacramento city alone. Surprisingly the robbers aren’t targeting cash but only drugs – anything that has a narcotic value. As per reports all the suspects are black males in their late teens or early 20s. They enter the pharmacies in hooded sweatshirts wearing gloves with reusable bags. Once inside they ask for filling of the prescription drugs and quickly flee the premises in getaway cars in the parking lot. Unable to do much against them the Sacramento Police Department SPD is now seeking help from public in tracking down the burglars. On Dec. 14 2017 the state police department released pictures of the suspects who were allegedly involved in the robberies that took place on Feb. 13 June 20 Oct. 28 and Nov. 9. According to Sergeant Bryce Heinlein none of the suspects was carrying arms although one of them told a clerk that he was carrying a gun. With an increase in the robbery trend the law enforcement authorities are visibly concerned about the state of public health as well. Prescription opioids preferred choices Such crimes have risen by 163 percent statewide since 2015 according to the Drug Enforcement Administration DEA. Even though the SPD doesn’t keep a track of the yearly robberies the patrol officers did confirm a spike in the local regions in 2017. In some cases the robbers completely empty the shelves. “I don’t think they’re looking at the labels I think they’re just jumping counters and getting whatever they can then they’ll decipher it later” said Heinlein.

In Citrus Heights where eight pharmacies were robbed in 2017 and two in 2016 the unscupluous men knocked down an 87-year-old woman on Nov. 27 who later succumbed to her injuries. The police were successful in arresting one young man. In 2016 the doctors and dentists in California wrote 23.7 million opioid prescriptions for pain relief. The state also witnessed high rates of over prescription misuse and backchannel deviation of drugs.
