Why do we need to conserve Biodiversity ?What is Biodiversity ?: What is Biodiversity ? Biodiversity is also known as biological diversity; broadly speaking, biodiversity describes the huge variety of species (both plant and animal) found on Earth and the natural way in which ecosystems and communities are formed. Over time, humans have had a major impact on Earth's biodiversity so it is important to understand biodiversity in order not to destroy these fragile processes. Biodiversity includes: different ecosystems such as mountains, lakes, deserts, oceans, wetlands and forests genetic differences within the same species approximately 1.75 million identified species, with an estimate of between 3 and 10 million actual species.Biodiversity Picture :-: Biodiversity Picture :-Importance of Biodiversity :-: Importance of Biodiversity :- Biodiversity makes up the structure of the ecosystems and habitats that support essential living resources, including wildlife, fisheries and forests. It helps provide for basic human needs such as food, shelter, and medicine. It composes ecosystems that maintain oxygen in the air, enrich the soil, purify the water, protect against flood and storm damage and regulate climate. Biodiversity also has recreational, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic values.Biodiversity Importance …: Biodiversity Importance … The fact is that all the species of flora and fauna, including humans, are dependent on each other, and the extinction of any one of these species can trigger a domino effect on the other species, which are directly or indirectly dependent on it. For instance, the extinction of the apex predator of a particular biome is bound to result in severe depletion of the vegetation cover here as the number of herbivores will increase due to lack of predators to curb their growth. When we talk about biodiversity importance, even those miniscule organisms which we can't see with our naked eye play a crucial role in smooth functioning of the ecosystem. These are some reasons why Biodiversity is essential ….: These are some reasons why Biodiversity is essential …. Biodiversity is essential to global food security and nutrition and also serves as a safety-net to poor households during times of crisis. Increased diversity of genes within species e.g. as represented by livestock breeds or strains of plants, reduces risk from diseases and increases potential to adapt to changing climates. More than 70,000 plant species are used in traditional and modern medicine. The value of global ecosystem services is estimated at $16-$64 trillion.Example for Importance of Biodiversity :-: Example for Importance of Biodiversity :- For instance, A basic requirement for plant growth, nitrogen, is produced by the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the soil. If these bacteria species became extinct, the plants will have no nitrogen to grow, and this will result in the devastation of the agricultural sector. Wild animals encroach upon human habitation owing to loss of habitat and scarcity of food, both of which are caused as a result of human encroachment in their natural habitat.A food chain or food web --: A food chain or food web --Loss of Biodiversity :-: Loss of Biodiversity :-Threats to Biodiversity :-: Threats to Biodiversity :- Habitat loss Habitat fragmentation Edge effect Habitat degradation Water pollution Land pollution Exotic species So we need to improve in these fields to conserve Biodiversity…..Conservations of Biodiversity :-: Conservations of Biodiversity :- The best way to conserve biodiversity is to protect it before it becomes endangered. To conserve biodiversity, we must: stop over harvesting species, such as elephants, rhinos, and tigers, leopards and other big cats; stop polluting and otherwise disturbing habitats . stop spreading non-native species. We can also conserve biodiversity by reversing damage that has already been done. For example, we can restore natural communities by reintroducing native species and controlling invasive non-native species. ...If you live in an urban area:: If you live in an urban area: Conserve water. Conserve energy. Stop burning garbage. Limit use of non-biodegradable materials like plastics. Properly segregate and dispose of garbage segregation. Donate to funds that protect biodiversity. Learn more about biodiversity, visit eco-parks and other ecotourism sites. Do not buy meats or products from endangered species like reptiles, snakes and turtles, mollusks, rhinoceroses, etc..If you live along the seashore,: If you live along the seashore, Do not hunt endangered aquatic species. Do not use harmful fishing practices like dynamite fishing or use of poisons. Do not collect endangered species or their products like seashells, turtle eggs. Organize shoreline clean-up activities. Learn what types of fish are in danger of being overfished and don't buy them.If you live in the mountains,: If you live in the mountains, Do not cut trees Plant more trees Do not hunt endangered species Do not practice slash and burn agriculture Reintroduction and species preservation programsOther common steps ..: Other common steps .. Tree planting is for everyone, whether you live in cities or in villages. Trees are nature’s air conditioner and heater. Experts estimate that three properly-planted trees can reduce energy bills by as much as 30 percent - that’s both heating and cooling. Plant a tree every 22nd of May, the International Day for Biodiversity. The agriculture sector is aggressively pursuing organic farming, using compost as fertilizer, pushing vermiculture and intercropping to maximize productivity while preserving soil nutrients. More groups and countries are looking into rainwater catchment technology to conserve water for farm irrigation and domestic use. Medicinal plants are being given more credit for human health, wellness and beauty now, more than ever.THANK YOU !: THANK YOU !
