Deflating the prevalent personal protective equipment myths The world of safety management exists with many misconceptions. It’s not easy to guide the workers to wear personal protective equipment at the worksite for their safety. There can be many conceptions prevalent at the worksites or construction sites related to the amount of ppe required for a certain job the type of industrial safety gloves to be used cleaning the ppe after using it and many other sayings or conceptions. So let’s have a look at some of those to get our facts right:

slide 2:

1 “My staff doesn’t want to wear ppe how can I make them wear This isn’t possible ” The truth is according to OSHA and other occupational safety authorities rules or policies the employers have to provide all the workers with the required ppe for their specific tasks so that they are safe at work. 2 “The more the ppe from ppe manufacturers in India the better .” The facts teach us that both the cases of over and under protection can be highly dangerous for the workers while working with the hazards. Too much of ppe can increase the heat stress on the body by wearing too many layers of clothing while working. And under protection can lead to some severe problems due to overexposure to certain hazards for a longer period of time. So better is to find the ppe which is comfortable for the workers and at the same time is the suitable equipment for the particular task. 3 “Cleaning and storing is the last thing to be done to the ppe .” It is said that everything that is clean and maintained are durable and stay comfortable. So after each use ppe must be properly cleaned and stored as per the instructions mentioned on the user manual. The damages of the ppe don’t let it function the next time and it may be another cause for an injury. Any damaged ppe must be reported to the

managers so that it can be replaced soon without any delay in the progress of the work. One must not think the way it has always been. While we have debunked these myths we have learned something new and changed our perceptions too. Since we have tried to make an attempt on learning the new perceptions we need to start implementing them so that we are able to bring out the best in our workers.
