According to the CAST website UDL “is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn.” UDL is a formula to help all students learn by gearing lessons to how they learn best. Students Collaborating : Students Collaborating Slide 4: UDL takes in the fact that everybody learns differently. Some people are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. Neural Networks : Neural Networks Recognition Network “What” we learn Strategic Network “How” we learn Affective Network “Why” we learn Neural Networks : Neural Networks Recognition Network : Recognition Network How we gather facts and categorize what we see, hear, and read. In the classroom we need to provide multiple ways we present information. You need to consider the best way students learn and customize your lesson to fit those needs. You may use a video for audio and visual learners to introduce a new topic. For you kinesthetic learners you can have them build a project about a concept. Strategic Network : Strategic Network How we organize and express our ideas. In the classroom we need to use multiple means of expression and action. You need to give your students multiple ways to learn the curriculum. For example students may be able to write an essay or tape a podcast for an assignment. Affective Network : Affective Network How learners are challenged, excited, or interested. You need to find multiple ways to keep the students engaged in learning. For example if your method of teaching is lecture, change it up and take the class on an educational trip around the school. Make sure that you prepare your students, especially if some of them can’t handle change like an autistic student. Technology in UDL : Technology in UDL A central idea of UDL is that as new curricular materials and learning technologies are developed, they should be designed from the beginning to be flexible enough to accommodate the unique learning styles of a wide range of individuals, including children with disabilities. Some assistive devices are Audio Books Text-to-Speech Ipad Type instead of writing Impact on Student Learning : Impact on Student Learning UDL seriously impacts student learning. Students are more receptive to the concepts they learn in the classroom because they get it. Educators like UDL because they know that the students are getting all the important information presented to them. Administration like UDL because the test scores reflect what the student have learned throughout the school year. Class Project : Class Project Learning Difference : Learning Difference UDL also helps with students with disabilities, race, and cultural differences. By knowing the way each student learns, educators can cater to the needs of each individual child. Giving interest and learning surveys early in the school year will give you insight on your students. Brain Research : Brain Research Three areas recognition (back of brain), strategic (front of brain, and affective Brain Research : Brain Research Recognition This part of the brain helps us recognize voices, faces, letters, and words. Brain Research : Brain Research Strategic This part of the brain helps us make choices and plans. Brain Research : Brain Research Affective This part of the brain controls our emotions, likes, dislikes and fears. Implications : Implications UDL is a great way to get all students involved. Race, gender, or intelligence does not matter. UDL provides teachers the tools to overcome these barriers and to help students learn in an environment catered for them. CAST Online Tools and Resources : CAST Online Tools and Resources Goal Setter The goal setter helps you look at your states goal and help you customize that goal to your students needs. Curriculum Barrier Helps you analyze the barriers your curriculum has and shows how to overcome them. Image Collector Helps you find images that are appropriate for your class, but also give meaning to your lesson.
