Included after the current photo of each building is a print or photo of the building shortly after it was built. The accompanying music and historical happenings are also from the time each building was built.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows Building Built in 1852 Other Events in 1852: The first airship is displayed. Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes the ground-breaking novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Studebaker Wagon Co., a precursor to the auto manufacturer, is established. Massachusetts rules that all school age children must attend school.

First Presbyterian Church Built in 1885 Gottlieb Daimler’s motorcycle, the world’s first, is unveiled. Other Events in 1885: Dr. W.W. Grant performs first appendectomy. Washington Monument is dedicated. The first gasoline pump is delivered to a gasoline dealer in Fort Wayne, Indiana . Cars had not been invented yet. It was for kerosene lamps and stoves.

Shelbyville High School Built in 1896 Other Events in 1896: The Tootsie Roll was introduced by confectioner Leo Hirshfield . Henry takes his first Ford through the streets of Detroit. A.A. Stagg of University of Chicago creates the football huddle. The first X-ray photo in the U.S. is taken by Dr. Henry Smith Davidson.

Knights of Pythias Building Built in 1901 Other events in 1901: Oil was discovered in Texas. The first games were played in baseball’s American League. Cecil Booth patented a “dust-removing suction cleaner.” He later patents the vacuum cleaner. Benjamin Adams is arrested for playing golf on Sunday.

Alhambra Theatre Built in 1913 Other events in 1913: The first crossword puzzle, which had 32 clues, was published in the New York Word. Lincoln Beachey was the first American to fly the loop the loop. Gideon Sundback of Sweden patents the zipper. 16 th Amendment establishing a Federal income tax as ratified. The tax rate was 1%.

Shelbyville City Hall Built in 1929 Other Events in 1929: Mickey Mouse made his first appearance. Buddy, a German Shepherd, becomes the first guide dog for the blind. Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin. Sliced bread was sold for the first time by the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri.
