Jaw Relation Registration:

Jaw Relation Registration

Why to Record the Jaw Relations ?:

Why to Record the Jaw Relations ? To establish and maintain a harmonious relationship with all oral structures and to provide a masticatory apparatus that is efficient and esthetically acceptable. To ensure that all the effects of occlusal loading be distributed as evenly as possible to all supporting structures capable of receiving the force. To best control the undesirable effects of rotational or torquing forces on the prosthesis.

Why to Record the Jaw Relations ?:

To prevent any deflective contacts of the teeth during centric or eccentric closures as these can produce pathological changes in the supportive structures or in the neuromuscular mechanism that controls mandibular movement. Why to Record the Jaw Relations ?

Slide 4:

Guide lines : Nasolabial angle esthetically should be maintained at 90’. Lip Support High lip support <90 Low lip support >90

Slide 5:

Vermillion border should look mut, and no shiny mucosa should appear! Philtrum of the lip is a fold, when over supported disappears! Lip Support

Slide 6:

The appearance of the upper central incisors below the lip line. Low lip line, the position of the upper lip when the jaws are relaxed and put at rest, 2 mm of the central incisors should appear. Incisal Show

Slide 7:

The plane to which the anterior teeth should be set, and to which the rim must be trimmed, is parallel to an imaginary line joining the pupils of the eyes {Interpapillary line} Adjusting the Anterior plane

Slide 8:

The plane to which the posterior teeth should be aligned, so the rim should be parallel to the Ulla-Tragus line, an imaginary line running from the tragus of the ear to the Ulla of the nose. Adjusting the Anteroposterior plane

Slide 9:

An imaginary vertical line which bisects the face in between the mesial faces of the upper central incisors, or a line from the centre of the brows to the centre of the chin. For aesthetic reasons, it’s preferable that the artificial divisions should be symmetrical, or occupy the same position. The Centre Line

Slide 10:

The line just in contact with the lower border of the upper lip when it is raised as high as possible, as in smiling. This line assists in determining the length of the tooth needed. It’s marked on the labial surface of the rim. The High Lip Line

Slide 11:

Mark the corners of the mouth when the lips are relaxed, and coincide with the tips of the upper canine teeth. It indicates the width to be taken up by the sex anterior teeth from tip to tip of the canines. The Canine Lines

Slide 12:

Vertical Jaw Relations: Rest Vertical Dimension ‘RVD’. Occlusion Vertical Dimension ‘OVD’. Interocclusal space ‘free way space’. Horizontal Jaw Relations: Centric Relation. Jaw Relation Records

Slide 13:

The vertical distance between two selected points, one on the fixed (maxilla) and one on the movable member (mandible). The patient should be seated in an upright position so Frankfort line , an imaginary line between the tip of the eye and the tragus of the ear, this line should be parallel with the ground. Vertical Jaw Relation

Slide 14:

Rest Vertical Dimension (RVD) is the distance measured when the mandible is in the rest position. We ask the patient to relax his face and repeat the letter M and stop without separating the lips. Or, ask him to moisten the lips with the tongue and then close them to a comfortable state. Measurement should be re-checked. Vertical Jaw Relation {RVD}

Slide 15:

Occlusal vertical Dimension (OVD) is the distance measured when the occluding rims or teeth are in contact. We add the lower rim and adjust the occlusal surface until it occludes evenly with the upper rim, and measure the OVD Vertical Jaw Relation{OVD}

Slide 16:

The distance between the occluding surfaces of maxillary and mandibular teeth when the mandible is in the rest position. For a complete denture patient, it is the difference between RVD and OVD. Inter-Occlusal Distance RVD – OVD = 2-4 mm or RVD – 2-4 mm = OVD

Slide 17:

Centric Relation {the most retruded position of the mandible to maxilla at an established OVD}. It is a bone to bone relation that is repeatable by the patient. It remains constant throughout life & during its recording cuspal relation of the teeth is not considered. Horizontal Jaw Relation

Slide 18:

The maxillo-mandibular relationship in which the condyles articulate with the thinnest a vascular portion of their respective disks, with the complex in the anterior-superior position against the slopes of the articular eminences. Horizontal Jaw Relation {Centric relation}

Slide 19:

To record this position, the mandible is directed superiorly and anteriorly restricted to a purely rotary movement about a transverse horizontal axis. We apply the most retruded position by 3 ways: Ask the patient to swallow and occlude. Ask the patient to retrude his tongue to the most upward position. Ask the patient to relax his jaw completely and guide the mandible by hand. Horizontal Jaw Relation {Centric relation}
