Glenmark Pharmaceuticals was founded by Gracias Saldanha in 1977. He started his career as a medical representative and worked his way up through the ranks in MNC pharma companies like Abbott Laboratories, Aristo, E Merck from 1964 to 1977. 2Cont…: Cont… Even before starting Glenmark, he had 20-25 years of experience in the pharma industry. Before joining Glenmark, Glenn had stints with Eli Lilly and Price Water house Coopers after completing his bachelors in pharmacy from Mumbai University and MBA from Leonard Stern School of Business, New York University. He retired in 2000 and his son, Glenn Saldanha, MD and CEO Glenmark Pharmaceuticals took charge of the company as an Executive Director. Glenmark was started as a small bulk drugs firm with 99 percent domestic focus, and when Glenn came on board, it was decided to revamp its business strategy and build it into complete research driven organization. 3Cont..: Cont.. In 1979, Gracias Saldanha company entered the anti-fungal market, where competition was less due to the relatively smaller market size, by introducing Candid Cream. During 1987, the Company started a Research and Development Department at it's Nasik factory. Saldanha is estimated to be worth $675 billion as of 2011 by Forbes and was ranked as the 77th richest person in world. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, under the able leadership of Saldanha, is making a foray in the European market. All along, the company has been one of the frontrunners in the industry. Even in the current race for newer acquisitions and mergers, it is seen to have held its fort ably. Undeniably, all this has been possible because of one man - Saldanha. 4Strategies : Strategies Glenmark is one company which has been successful both in innovation as well as in generics. In a very short time span, they were able to build a very sizeable and strong US generics business. "So because of that Saldanha thought he could create a global innovative platform out of India. And he still come from that belief that one can truly create an innovative company out of India.“ Hence, Gracias and Glenn's adopted the Novartis-Sandoz model of spinning off the generics business, so that the generics company (Glenmark Generics) focuses on generic and the parent company on innovation. 5 Accolades: Accolades “ Young Business Leader of the Year” by UK Trade & Investment in Oct‟09.
