development of conceptual framework…

Slide 16:

In 1981, King stated that an awareness of complex dynamics of human behavior in nursing situations prompted her formulation of the conceptual framework

Slide 17:

King believes it is necessary to understand the concepts of body, image, growth, and development, perception, self, space, and time in order to understand human beings as persons…

Slide 18:

King was led to identify one approach to studying systems as a whole rather than isolated parts of a system and used the systems approach in development…

Slide 19:

because “systems have been used in the past to comprehend and respond to changes and complexity in health care organizations” (Fawcett, 2005, p . 89).

Slide 20:

King’s goal in developing the framework is to help people maintain their health and to incorporate the idea that human beings are open systems interacting with their environment (King, 1981, p.vii ).

Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment:

Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment The nursing process is combined with the model of 3 interacting systems. THE THREE SYSTEMS: The 3 systems are an important part of each individual Personal: (individual/intrapersonal).  Understanding the patient's self-perception, own personal growth and development. Interpersonal: (Interactions b/w 2 or more persons).  Knowing the patient's roles, interactions, sources of stress. Social: (school, work, etc.)  Understanding what influences the patient's decision making, where they find authority and power, their social status.

Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment:

Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment Assessing, diagnosing, identifying outcomes, planning, implementing and evaluating, you should pay close attention to the 3 different systems in the client's life. Two very important aspects of the theory of goal attainment are being interactive with the patient, and having mutual goals. When the nurse and client communicate and work together toward mutually selected goals, they are more likely to be met.

Slide 23:

Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment Emphasizes joint goal setting by nurse & patient. Personal Interpersonal Social

Slide 24:

King's Theory: Informing Our Nursing Practice Teaching nurses to set mutual goals with patients and establish a trusting relationship that can be monitored. Provides steps to identifying a common goal and the best means of attaining it. Provides a way of understanding individuals as a whole person, allowing us to meet more of their needs and discover underlying problems by examining personal and interpersonal systems. Teaches us to have personal interaction with our patients and increasing their involvement. All of these things can be used to help us be better nurses by improving our relationships with patients.

Slide 25:

King has consistently demonstrated her willingness to mentor nurses and students across all roles and settings. Most importantly, King role models nurses’ responsibility to actively contribute to the advancement of the profession…

Slide 26:

As a result, she has personally influenced the life, community, and profession of nurses and nursing… For that, we as a group, honor the great works of Dr. Imogene King
