Step 1 :
Step 1 ID the declension:
- 1st Declension: -a, -ae (f)
e.g. puella, -ae (f) – girl
- 2nd Declension (masculine): -us/-r, -i (m)
e.g. servus, -i (m) – slave
puer, -i (m) – boy
- 2nd Declension (neuter): -um, -i (n)
e.g. templum, -i (n) – temple
-3rd Declension (m/f): * (changes with word), - is (m) (f)
e.g. vox, vocis (f) – voice
homo, hominis (m) – man
- 3rd Declension (n): * (changes with word), -is (n)
e.g. iter, itineris (n) - journey
Step 2 :
Step 2 Fill in the stem (chop off the genitive ending – the second form in the dictionary entry – and put it in the boxes):
Example (we’ll pick a tough 3rd declension):
vox, vocis (f) –voice
Step 3 :
Step 3 “Glue” on the appropriate endings!
3rd Declension Neuter :
3rd Declension Neuter If the noun is 3rd declension neuter, then put the first dictionary form in both nominative and accusative singular.
e.g. iter, itineris (n) - journey
