Combustion Reactions PowerPoint :Combustion Reactions PowerPoint By: Sean Paltzer http://www.biomasscombustion.com/img/wood_burning.jpg THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS ARE :THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS ARE There are six different types of Chemical reactions- Combustion Synthesis Decomposition Single displacement Double displacement Acid-base http://www.tenafly.k12.nj.us/~shilfstein/ http://misterguch.brinkster.net/6typesofchemicalrxn.html WHAT IS A COMBUSTION REACTION :WHAT IS A COMBUSTION REACTION A combustion reaction takes place when a fuel and an oxidant react, producing heat or heat and light. The most recognizable form of combustion reaction is flame, with explosions being an even faster form of combustion reaction. A combustion can happen at a wide range of speeds, and can occur in many different environments, but the majority of combustions we know happen in a small range. http://www.oapt.ca/images/2006/nada_gawad_01.jpg http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-combustion-reaction.htm WHAT IS A FIRE TRIANGLE :WHAT IS A FIRE TRIANGLE The fire triangle is used to show the three things a fire needs to burn, heat, fuel, and oxygen. Without one of the three the fire would be put out. http://www.valleylabeducation.org/fire/images/triangle.gif WHAT IS ACTIVATION ENERGY :WHAT IS ACTIVATION ENERGY Activation energy is the energy needed in order for a chemical reaction to begin. Least amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction. Usually denoted by Ea. http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/bc/ahp/MBG/MBG4/ActivationEnergy.03.GIF http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activation_energy WHY IS HEAT/ENERGY A NECESSARY PART OF THE FIRE TRIANGLE :WHY IS HEAT/ENERGY A NECESSARY PART OF THE FIRE TRIANGLE Without sufficient heat, a fire cannot begin, and it cannot continue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_square http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fire_triangle.svg HOW IS THE COOKTOP OF YOUR STOVE A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE OF A FIRE TRIANGLE :HOW IS THE COOKTOP OF YOUR STOVE A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE OF A FIRE TRIANGLE The stove needs heat, oxygen, and fuel to light the plates creating a fire triangle. http://www.geappliances.com/products/introductions/cooktops/images/background_cooktop.jpg http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/sampat4-314754-combustion-reactions-science-technology-ppt-powerpoint/ WHAT IS A COMBUSTION ENGINE :WHAT IS A COMBUSTION ENGINE Any engine in which a fuel-air mixture is burned in the engine proper so that the hot gaseous products of combustion act directly on the surfaces of its moving parts, such as those of pistons or turbine rotor blades. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine http://www.unc.edu/~prinarp/engine.jpg HOW DOES A COMBUSTION ENGINE WORK :HOW DOES A COMBUSTION ENGINE WORK A fuel, such as gasoline, fills a chamber and then is ignited by a spark plug, causing a small explosion which generates work. The heated gas created by the explosion pushes a piston, which drives a crankshaft usually connected to an axle. The axle is connected to wheels which turn to drive a vehicle forward. http://www.wisegeek.com/how-does-an-internal-combustion-engine-work.htm https://www-pls.llnl.gov/data/assets/images/science_and_technology/chemistry/combustion/engines.jpg NASCAR vs. STREET CARS :NASCAR vs. STREET CARS The engine is large generates well over 300 hp. NASCAR engines have extremely radical cam profiles that allows more air. There are no mufflers or catalytic converters to slow the exhaust down, either. They have high-intensity, programmable ignition systems customized to provide the most possible power. That means that more oxygen is available during combustion. With more oxygen in the engine, it can also take in more fuel. This means the same engine can produce more power (go faster). http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question259.htm http://image.kitcarmag.com/f/techarticles/9635529+w200/0603kc_01_z+nitrous_oxide_system+.jpg ONE EXAMPLE OF CHEATING IN NASCAR IS :ONE EXAMPLE OF CHEATING IN NASCAR IS on June 19, 1949. Winner Glenn Dunnaway was found cheating when his moonshine car was found to have “altered rear springs.” He was DQ’d AND his $2000 prize money was taken and given to second place Jim Roper. http://img93.imageshack.us/i/nocheating.jpg/ http://www.speedtv.com/wiki/Cheating-in-NASCAR/
