I thought that we could do with a few pictures to remind ourselves of where we may have been - with a few links here and there. Perhaps you know about public lectures but always seem to hear about them after they've been held? Slide 15: World fact book Slide 16: The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, 1674-1913 – A collaboration between the Open University, and the Universities of Hertfordshire and Sheffield, The Old Bailey Proceedings Online makes available a fully searchable, digitised collection of all surviving editions of the Old Bailey Proceedings from 1674 to 1913. http://www.oldbaileyonline.org.uk/ Slide 18: Smart Notebook viewer If students want to view Smart Notebook files that you have created they can download and install this program (at home). See the website BESPOKE DVDSOU Worldwide has launched a Bespoke DVD service which allows fans of OU/BBC programmes to buy their own personalised DVDs made up from their favourite episodes. Series currently available include James May's 20th Century, Landscape Mysteries, History Mysteries, African School, Ever Wondered About Food, Nation on Film, Rough Science, The Cosmos, Stardate, Discovering Tchaikovsky and Can Gerry Robinson fix the NHS? More programmes are due to be added. Slide 23: The Eden Project - The Inside Story A unique behind the scenes record of the birth of one of the world's most remarkable projects. It's all here, from construction against the odds to the sourcing, nurturing and planting of over 120,000 plants from across the world. Slide 25: Architect Studio It might be useful for art and design students. It’s a very user friendly architectural design tool with 3d graphics and once in the design studio, you can navigate through the design using the arrow keys as in PC/video games. There is also a gallery, where other online users have posted their designs. You will need Flash and Shockwave to view contents. Recommended by Vikula Kuruwitage. Slide 26: Launch of Visual Arts data service (VADs) - Students and academics looking for visual arts images now have online access to a collection of over 100,000 images on the new VADs website. The image resources are free and copyright cleared for use in UK Higher and Further Education.http://www.vads.ac.uk/news/relaunch.html Slide 28: Want control over the Internet or program use in your class? It also provides a brief historical overview of the three communities’ experience in Britain: downloadable resources for teachers; and links to relevant websites .” Ted Heath, Systems Co-ordinator, Southwark College Slide 34: Enough daydreaming. “Sketchcast is a rather nifty little tool that is featured in this week's Chronicle, allowing users to basically record an audio track over whiteboard drawings. Very handy for an alternative animation approach and also, presumably for those teaching mathematics or solving equations, etc. The only problem, and from playing with it I think its a significant one, is that drawing with a mouse is pretty awful and you probably need a pen /tablet type device to get the most out of this kind of tool. Certainly that's always been an issue with computer art anyway, but try writing text and numbers with a mouse on click-and-drag.....argh! However, if you do buy a pen/tablet (and they are pretty inexpensive) and have a microphone, well the world's your oyster as they say!” Iain Maclaren, Galway, Ireland.
