What is Biochemistry? :

What is Biochemistry? Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes in living organisms. It deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules.

Chemical Bonds :

Chemical Bonds Two types: Covalent bond – forms between atoms of non-metals bt sharing of electrons – Molecules bond covalently Ionic bond – forms between oppositely charged ions after the transfer of electrons – Salts and ionically

Organic Molecules :

Organic Molecules Organic molecules are molecules composed of carbon and hydrogen, and often containing other elements such as phosphorus, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen.

Elements of Life :

Elements of Life Carbon Hydrogen Phosphorus Sulfur Oxygen Nitrogen - Those six elements make up 96 % of your mass.

Carbohydrates :

Carbohydrates They are two types Simple Sugars – Glucose, sucrose and others Complex Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates that are made of long chains of sugars As well as starches, cellulose, glycogen

Simple Sugars :

Simple Sugars All sugars are made of units of sugar (also known as saccharide units) Carbohydrates that contain only one sugar unit are called monosaccharides. Disaccharides have two sugar units bonded together (The sucrose is a common disaccharide)

Complex Carbohydrates :

Complex Carbohydrates Complex carbohydrates are polymers of the simple sugars The carbohydrates are long chains of bounded simple sugar units. For this reason they are also called polysaccharides.

Complex Carbohydrates :

Complex Carbohydrates Starch is a polymer of the monosaccharide glucose Starches and cellulose are complex carbohydrates used by plants for energy storage and structural integrity. Glycogen is another polymer of glucose. It is used by animals to store energy. Starch is a long, straight chain of glucose units, whereas glycogen is a branched chain of glucose units.

Glycogen :

Glycogen

Starch :

Starch

Proteins :

Proteins Proteins are polymers of amino acids Amino acids all have the general structure:

- There are 20 amino acids in the human body :

- There are 20 amino acids in the human body When 2 amino acids bond together, water is released as the carboxyl end of one amino acid bonds to the amine end of the adjacent one forming a peptide bond. Because water is lost the process is called: Condensation synthesis, or… Condensation polymerization

Proteins :

Proteins Proteins are large molecules that may consist of hundreds, or even thousands of amino acids. Proteins are important in cell structure, as enzymes, which speed up reactions in the body, and as antibodies which fight infection

Fats: :

Fats: Fats are also knows as lipids. They are found in the body and have the general property of being hydrophobic (they are insoluble in water) Other lipids include steroids, such as cholesterol and waxes.

Fats: :

Fats: Fats are also knows as triglycerides, molecules made from the combination of one molecule of glycerol with three fatty acids. Fats are concentrated forms of energy storage 9 calories per gram Fats are components of cell membranes
