Aftermath of English Loss Henry VI undergoes mental collapse. Richard, Duke of York, elected as Lord Protector. Imprisons and exiles many Lancastrian supporters.

Conflict Begins : 

Conflict Begins Henry VI resumes power in 1455. Queen Margaret wants Richard of York OUT! Richard decides to attack and avoid arrest for treason. Battle of St. Albans! Yorkist Victory! Wars of Roses begin!

Wars of the Roses? Term given to the era by historians centuries afterward. Red Rose of Lancaster. White Rose of York.

Fifteenth Century Warfare? : 

Fifteenth Century Warfare? Calvary and footsoldiers. Archers… …then CHARGE! Warfare evolving with cannons and bombards. Poleaxes!

1455 Henry VI rules in London while Richard of York is a leading voice in Parliament and the Court. 1457 Irish raiders pirating English coasts. Henry VI becoming unpopular with merchants in London. 1459 Henry VI moves court to Coventry. Richard of York gathers supporters in Yorkshire. Lancastrians win Battle of Ludford Bridge Richard of York flees to Calais in France. 1460 Yorkists win Battle of Northampton. Richard of York marches to London to claim throne.

Act of Accord : 

Act of Accord Parliament votes to keep Henry VI as king. Names the Duke of York as successor. Henry VI’s son, Prince Edward of Westminster, is disinherited. Queen Margaret flees north to rally Lancastrian supporters.

Lancastrian Resistance : 

Lancastrian Resistance Richard of York moves to fight Queen Margaret’s forces. Battle of Wakefield. Edward of March becomes Duke of York. Slain 1461

Battle of Towton : 

Battle of Towton March 1461: Lancastrians and Yorkists agree on settling issue. No quarter given. Yorkist weather advantage. 30,000 killed. Lancastrians retreat. Henry VI and Queen Margaret flee to Scotland. Edward IV crowned.

Edward IV’s Reign : 

Edward IV’s Reign Quelled Lancastrian resistance during 22 year reign. 1465: Imprisoned Henry VI. 1471: Former Prince Edward killed in battle. Henry VI executed ten days later. 1482: Former Queen Margaret dies in France.
