Swami Vivekananda Who is Swami Vivekananda? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863--4 July 1902) the prophet of the modern world, was born in Calcutta, and educated there. He was perfectly rational, and would never believe in anything unless he himself experienced it. His search for God or Truth began even when he was a child. His search led him to Sri Ramakrishna [1836-1886], who had practised all the spiritual paths with success, and had realized that all paths lead to the same goal. Under his teacher, Sri Ramakrishna, he got training in spirituality. Vivekananda attained the highest experience in spiritual life very soon. Later, he had countless spiritual experiences every day. He had Nirvikalpa Samadhi several times. He then set about to understand the condition of his country and the world at large. Vivekananda travelled all over India and he understood that the world needed positive, life-giving ideas and participated in the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Slide 3:

Swami Vivekananda Who is Swami Vivekananda? Vivekananda declared the necessity of the harmony of religions there. He was the first prophet to declare this. Apart from this, Vivekananda had the heart of the universal mother. He wept to see the pitiable condition of the people—some suffering from want of food and clothing, some suffering from want of peace, some suffering from other problems. Why were people suffering? Ignorance was the answer. Vivekananda understood that the solution to all problems was in understanding our true nature. We are not the body, or the mind. We are the eternal Self, the Atman. Not knowing our reality, we hold on to false things and go on suffering in life. Vivekananda therefore called upon humanity to give up negative notions and know the truth about ourselves. His words are powerful—coming as they are from the mouth of the prophet. Let us read them, and emulate them in our lives. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service www.uttishthata.org SkebÀ meefÜÒee yengOee Jeoefvle~

Swami Vivekananda Who is Swami Vivekananda? This life is precious. We are wasting this precious life in ordinary, meaningless things and enjoyments. Let us seek something meaningful. Let us go forward to know greater things. Let us once and for all give up the idea that we are sinners, useless people, and so on. Let us know that we are the Atman. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata Next Previous My ideal, indeed can be put into a few words, and that is: to preach unto mankind their Divinity, and how to make it manifest in every movement of life. www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service www.uttishthata.org

Slide 7:

Swami Vivekananda Patriot-Saint http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next I believe in patriotism, and I also have my own ideal of patriotism. Three things are necessary for great achievements : First, feel from the heart. What is in the intellect or reason? It goes a few steps and there it stops. But through the heart comes inspiration. Love opens the most impossible gates; love is the gate to all the secrets in the universe. Feel, therefore, my would-be reformers, my would-be patriots! Do you feel? Do you feel that the millions and millions of the descendants of gods and of sages have become next-door neighbours to brutes? Do you feel that millions have been starving today, and millions have been starving for ages? Do you feel that ignorance has come over the land as a dark cloud? Does it make you restless? Does it make you sleepless? Has it gone over your blood, coursing through your veins, becoming consonant with your heart-beats? Has it made you almost mad? Are you seized with the one idea of misery and ruin, and have you forgotten all about your name, your fame, your wives, your children, your property, even your own bodies? Have you done that? This is the first step to become a patriot, the very first step....... Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

Slide 8:

Swami Vivekananda Patriot-Saint http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next You may feel, then; but instead of spending your energies on frothy talk, have you found any way out, any practical solution, some help instead of condemnation, some sweet words to soothe their miseries, to bring them out of this living death? Yet that is not all. Have you got the will to surmount mountain high obstructions? If the whole world stands against you sword in hand, would you still dare to do what you think is right? If your wife and children are against you, if all your money goes, your name dies, your wealth vanishes, would you still stick to it? Would you still pursue it and go on steadily towards your own goal? As the great King Bhartruhari says : “Let the sages blame or let them praise; let the goddess of fortune come or let her go wherever she likes; let death come today, or let it come after millions of years; he indeed is the steady man who does not move one inch from the way of truth.” (Niti-sataka, verse 74) Have you got that steadfastness? If you have these three things, each one of you will make miracles. Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

Swami Vivekananda Prophet of Holy-Land: Bharat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next “This is the land from whence, like the tidal waves, spirituality and philosophy have again and again rushed out and deluded the world, and this is the land from whence, once more such tides must proceed in order to bring life and vigour into the decaying races of mankind. It is the same India, which has withstood the shocks of hundreds centuries, of hundreds of foreign invasions, of hundreds of upheavals of manners and customs. It is the same land, which stands firmer than any rock in the world, with its undying vigour, indestructible life. Its life is of the same nature as the soul, without beginning and without end, immortal; and we are the children of such a country. “I am one of the proudest men ever born, but let me tell you frankly, it is not for myself but on account of my ancestry. “Our heroes must be spiritual. Such a hero has been given to us in the person of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Slide 11:

Swami Vivekananda Prophet of Holy-Land: Bharat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next “National union in India must be a gathering up of its sacred spiritual forces. A nation in India must be a union of those whose hearts beat to the same spiritual tune. For the sake of the national life, you have to get a hold on spirituality and keep to it. “If you give up that spirituality, leaving it aside, and rush after the materializing civilizations of the West, the result will be that in three generations you will be an extinct race. “India’s gift to the world is light spiritual.”- Swami Vivekananda Swami Vivekananda saved Hinduism and saved India. But for him we would have lost our religion, and would not have gained our freedom. We, therefore owe everything to Swami Vivekananda. May his faith, his courage and his wisdom ever inspire us so that we can keep safe the treasure we have received from him – C. Slide 12:

Swami Vivekananda Prophet of Holy-Land: Bharat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next “The debt which the world owes to our Motherland is immense. Taking country with country, there is not one race on this earth to which the world owes so much as to the patient Hindu, the mild Hindu. Here activity prevailed when even Greece did not exist, when Rome was not thought of, when the very fathers of the modern Europeans lived in the forests and pained themselves blue. Even earlier, when history has no record, and tradition dares not peer into the gloom of that intense past, even from then until now, ideas after ideas have marched out from her, but every word has been spoken with a blessing behind it, and peace before it.” India will be raised, not with the power of flesh, but with the power of the spirit; not with the flag of destruction, but with the flag of peace and love. One vision I see clear as life before me, that the ancient Mother has awakened once more, sitting on Her throne--rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Let her spring from the grocer’s shop, from beside the oven of the fritter-seller, Let her emanate from the factory, from marts, and from markets. Let her emanate from groves and forests, from hills and mountains.” Previous “The more, therefore, the Hindus study the past, the more glorious will be their future, and whoever tries to bring their past to the door of everyone, is a great benefactor to his nation. The degeneration of India came not because the laws and customs of the ancients were bad, but because they were not allowed to be carried to their legitimate conclusions.” “The national ideals of India are RENUNCIATION and SERVICE. Work out the salvation of this land and the whole world, each of you thinking that the entire burden is on your shoulders. Carry the light and the life of the Vedanta to every door, and rouse up the divinity that is hidden within every soul.” “Make your nerves strong. What we want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel. We have wept long enough. No more weeping, but stand on your feet and be men.” “My faith is in the younger generation, the modern generation, out of them will come my workers. They will work out the whole problem, like lions. I have formulated the idea and have given my life to it. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.” “Go and preach to all: ‘Arise, awake, sleep no more; within each of you, there is the power to remove all wants and all miseries. Slide 20:

Let each one of us pray day and night for the downtrodden millions in India—who are held fast by poverty, priest-craft, and tyranny—pray day and night for them; I care more to preach religion to them than to rich. I am poor, I love the poor. Let new India arise… Let her arise – out of peasants’ cottages, grasping the plough, out of the huts of fisherman, the cobbler and the sweeper. Let her spring from the grocer’s shop, from beside the oven of the fritter-seller. Let her emanate from groves and forests, from hills and mountains. Education, education, education alone! Travelling through many cities of Europe and observing in them the comforts and education of even the poor people, there was brought to my mind the state of our own poor people, and I used to shed tears. What made the difference? EDUCATION was the answer I got. The only service to be done for our lower classes is to give them education, to develop their lost individuality. Give them ideas—that is the only help they require, and then the rest must follow as the effect. Ours is to put the chemicals together, the crystallization comes in the law of nature. If the poor boy cannot come to education, education must go to him. Swami Vivekananda Saviour-prophet of the masses

Slide 21:

Swami Vivekananda-prophet of the mother power http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next The very peculiarity of Hindu women which they have developed and which is the ideal of their life, is that of the mother. The mother is the God in our family. The idea is that the only real love that we see in the world, the most unselfish love is in the mother–always suffering, always loving. And what love can represent the love of God more than the love, which we see in the mother? Thus the mother is the incarnation of God in earth to the Hindu. The ideal of perfect womanhood is total independence. The central idea of the life of modern Hindu lady is her chastity. Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service Total freedom and independence is the symbol of total womanhood.

Slide 22:

At the present time God should be worshipped as ‘Mother’, the infinite energy. This will lead to purity, and tremendous energy will come… We have to become Vedantists and live this grand thought; the masses must get it. The new cycle must see the masses living Vedanta, and this will have to come through women. Why is it that our country is the weakest and the most backward of all countries?—Because Shakti is held in dishonour there. “³e$e vee³e&mleg Hetp³evles jcevles le$e osJeleeë~” gods are pleased where women are held in esteem”—says the old Manu. The women of India must grow and develop in the footprints of Sita, and that is the only way. Any attempt to modernise our women, if it tries to take our women away from that ideal of Sita, is immediately a failure, as we see every day. Swami Vivekananda prophet of the mother power

Slide 23:

Swami Vivekananda-prophet with a message for the west http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next “I have a message for the West as Buddha had a message for the East” “The whole of the Western civilisation will crumble to pieces in the next fifty years if there is no spiritual foundation. Europe, the centre of manifestation of material energy, will crumble into dust within fifty years if she is not mindful to change her position, to shift her ground and make spirituality the basis of her life. And what will save Europe is the religion of the Upanishads.” Previous www.uttishthata.net “The power to satisfy our desires is increased in arithmetical progression, the power of desire is increased in geometrical progression.” About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service This great Hindu cyclone has shaken the world. Slide 24:

Swami Vivekananda Success Principles “One of the greatest lessons I have learned in my life is to pay as much attention to the means of work as to its end. I have been always learning great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secret of success is there: to pay as much attention to the means as to the end.” “There is the danger of frittering away your energies by taking up an idea only for its novelty, and then giving it up for another that is newer. Take one thing up and do it, and see the end of it, and before you have seen the end, do not give it up.” “Take up one idea, make that one idea your life, think of it, dream of it, live of it, let the brain, muscle, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way great spiritual giants are produced, others are mere talking machines” http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

They may titillate their nerves for a moment, but there it will end.” “Always first learn to be a servant, and then you will be fit to be a master. Avoid this jealousy, and you will do great works that have yet to be done” “Nature wants us to react, to return blow for blow, cheating for cheating, lie for lie, to hit back with all our might, then it requires a super divine power not hit back, to keep control, to be unattached” http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service “Misery comes through attachment, not through work. Slide 26:

Swami Vivekananda Success Principles “The great secret of true success, of true happiness, then, is this: the man who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish man, is the most successful. It seems to be a paradox. Do we not know that every man who is unselfish in life gets cheated, gets hurt? Apparently, yes. "Christ was unselfish, and yet he was crucified." True, but we know that his unselfishness is the reason, the cause of a great victory -- the crowning of millions upon millions of lives with the blessings of true success.” “The Upanishads have declared, "Arise! Awake! and stop not until the goal is reached." We will then certainly cross the path, sharp as it is like the razor, and long and distant and difficult though it be. Slide 30:

Swami Vivekananda education Aim of Education: Education is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas. If you have assimilated five ideas and made your life and character you have more education than any man who has got by heart a whole library. We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet. Method of Education: To me the very essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts. If I had to do my education over again, and had any voice in the matter, I would not study facts at all I would develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with the perfect instrument I could collect facts at will. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

Slide 31:

Swami Vivekananda education Curriculum: In ancient times, people used to go to sages to learn wisdom and to get answers to the fundamental questions of life. This was seen in all ancient civilizations-Greece, India and China in particular. However, over the centuries education has retreated from that position. We no longer claim to give wisdom, we give only information, our schools no longer give moral and spiritual values, only secular subjects are taught. Role of the Teacher: The only true teacher is he who can immediately come down to the level of the student and transfer his soul to the student’s soul and see through the student’s eyes and here through his ears and understand through his mind. Such a teacher can really teach and none else. …The only duty of the teacher is to remove all obstructions from the way. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

Slide 32:

Swami Vivekananda education Discipline: Another thing that we want is the abolition of that system which aims at educating our boys in the same manner as that of the man who battered his ass, being advised that it could thereby be turned into a horse… We must give only positive ideas. Negative ideas weaken men. Do you not find that where parents are constantly taxing their sons to read and write, telling them they will never learn anything, and calling them fools and so forth, the latter do actually turn out to be so in many cases? If you speak kind words to boys and encourage them, they are bound to improve in time. Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there undigested all your life. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service

Slide 33:

Swami Vivekananda Religion and ethics Unselfishness is God. Religion is the idea which is raising the brute unto man, and man unto God. The definition of God and man: Man is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but the centre is located in one spot; and God is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but whose centre is everywhere. The difference between God and the devil is in nothing except in unselfishness and selfishness. The devil knows as much as God, is as powerful as God; only he has no holiness—that makes him a devil. Apply the same idea to the modern world: excess of knowledge and power, without holiness, makes human beings devils. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service View of Belur Math from the Ganga

Swami Vivekananda Religion and ethics Virtue is that which tends to our improvement, and vice to our degeneration. Man is made up of three qualities—brutal, human, and godly. That which tends to increase the divinity in you is virtue, and that which tends to increase brutality in you is vice. You must kill the brutal nature and become human, that is loving and charitable. You must transcend that too and become pure bliss, Satchidananda, fire without burning, wonderfully loving, but without the weakness of human love, without the feeling of misery. The first sign that you are becoming religious is that you are becoming cheerful. The ideal of Vedanta is to know man as he really is, and this is its message, that if you cannot worship your brother man, the manifested God, how can you worship a God who is unmanifested? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service View of Belur Math from the Ganga

Therefore, stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succour you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own future. The dead never return; the past night does not reappear; a spent-up tidal wave does not rise anew; neither does man inhabit the same body over again. So from the worship of the dead past, O man, we invite you to the worship of the living present; from the regretful brooding over bygones, we invite you to the activities of the present; from the waste of energy in retracing lost and demolished pathways, we call you back to broad new-laid highways lying very near. He that is wise, let him understand.

We came here to sip the honey, and we find our hands and feet sticking to it. We are caught, though we came to catch. We came to enjoy; we are being enjoyed. We came to rule; we are being ruled. We came to work; we are being worked. All the time, we find that. And this comes into every detail of our life. ...That is the one cause of misery: we are attached, we are being caught. Therefore says the Gita: ‘Work constantly; work, but be not attached; be not caught.’

None can die; none can be degraded forever. Life is but a playground, however gross the play may be. However we may receive blows, and however knocked about we may be, the Soul is there and is never injured. We are that Infinite. Here we are in this world, and our nature rebels against it. But let us repeat, “I am It [the Self]; I am It. I have no fear, nor doubt, nor death. I have no sex, nor creed, nor colour. What creed can I have? What sect is there to which I should belong? What sect can hold me? I am in every sect!” However much the body rebels, however much the mind rebels, in the midst of the uttermost darkness, in the midst of agonizing tortures, in the uttermost despair, repeat this, once, twice, thrice, ever more. Light comes gently, slowly, but surely it comes.

Upon ages of struggle a character is built. Be not discouraged. One word of truth can never be lost; for ages it may be hidden under rubbish, but it will show itself sooner or later. Truth is indestructible, virtue is indestructible, purity is indestructible. What makes the difference between man and man is the difference in this Shrddha [faith] and nothing else. What makes one man great and another weak and low is this Shrddha. Be strong and have this Shrddha, and everything else is bound to follow. Many times I have been in the jaws of death, starving, footsore, and weary; for days and days I had had no food, and often could walk no farther; I would sink down under a tree, and life would seem ebbing away. I could not speak, I could scarcely think, but at last the mind reverted to the idea: “I have no fear nor death; I never hunger nor thirst. I am It! I am It! The whole of nature cannot crush me; it is my servant. Assert thy strength, thou Lord of lords and God of gods! Regain thy lost empire! Arise and awake and stop not!” And I would rise up, reinvigorated, and here am I, living, today.

That is a surer way of progress than taking up other men’s ideals, which he can never hope to accomplish.   ... Let every one do the best he can for realising his own ideal. Nor is it right that I should be judged by your standard or you by mine. The apple tree should not be judged by the standard of the oak, nor the oak by that of the apple. To judge the apple tree you must take the apple standard, and for the oak, its own standard. Our duty is to encourage every one in his struggle to live up to his own highest ideal, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the truth. The truth of the ideal is in the practical. The fruition of the ideal has been through the sensing of the practical. That the ideal is there is a proof of the existence of the practical somehow, somewhere. The ideal may be vaster, yet it is the multiplication of little bits of the practical. The ideal mostly is the summed-up, generalised, practical units.

Its work on us is in and through the practical. Through the practical, the ideal is brought down to our sense-perception, changed into a form fit for our assimilation. Of the practical we make the steps to rise to the ideal. On that we build our hopes; it gives us courage to work. One man who manifests the ideal in his life is more powerful than legions whose words can paint it in the most beautiful colours and spin out the finest principles. Neither money pays, nor name pays, nor fame, nor learning; it is CHARACTER that cleave through adamantine walls of difference.

Slide 41:

Swami Vivekananda Service to man is service to god You cannot help anyone, you can only serve; serve the children of the Lord, serve the Lord Himself, if you have the privilege. If the Lord grants that you can help any one of His children, blessed you are; do not think too much of yourselves. Blessed you are that that privilege was given to you when others had it not. Do it only as worship. My boy, if you have any respect for my words, the first thing I will advise you to do is to throw open all the doors and windows of your room. In your quarter there are lots of poor people sunk in degradation and misery. You will have to go to them with your zeal and enthusiasm. Arrange to distribute medicines to those who are sick, and nurse them with all care, supply food to him who is starving, teach with as much as lies in you the ignorant; and if you begin to serve your brethren in this wise, I tell you, my child, you will surely get peace and consolation. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uttishthata www.uttishthata.org Next Previous www.uttishthata.net About Success Faith & strength Man & Destiny Education Religion & Ethics Meditations Service
