EDU 6714-Reaching and Engaging all Learners Through Technology By Stacy Belson UNIVERSAL DESIGN for LEARNINGCAST: WHAT IS IT?: THE CENTER FOR APPLIED SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY CAST: WHAT IS IT? In 1984 a group of educational researchers founded the Center for Applied Special Technology . The group began by exploring ways of using new technologies to provide better educational experiences to students with disabilities. As CAST researchers tested and refined their principles, priorities, and vision over that first decade, they came to a new understanding of how to improve education using flexible methods and materials. They called this approach Universal Design for Learning (UDL).ARCHITECTURE AND LEARNING: ARCHITECTURE AND LEARNING Universal Design for Learning was inspired by the world of architecture. A process to help learners with disabilities gain access to the general education curriculum.Oops! Fixing the wrong, making it right!: Oops! Fixing the wrong, making it right! CAST realized, a few years after they began, that their focus was too narrow. They were helping the learner “fix” themselves to understand. “It obscured the critical role of the environment in determining who is or who is not considered disabled.” (CAST (2011). Universal Design for Learning Guidelines version 2.0. Wakesfield , MA: Author) They began focusing on the curriculum and its limitations. They needed to “fix” the curriculum, not the learners.A NEW BEGINNING…: A NEW BEGINNING… “CAST came to understand that learning involved specific challenges in the area to be learned, not the learner. Thus, the UDL principles arose. The UDL principles go deeper than focusing on physical access to the classroom; it focuses on access to all aspects of learning. The UDL framework helps educators to understand how to create curricula that meets the needs of all learners from the beginning. ( CAST (2011). Universal Design for Learning Guidelines version 2.0. Wakesfield , MA: Author)What is UDL?: What is UDL?A set of 3 principles which give all students an equality in learning through curriculum development : A set of 3 principles which give all students an equality in learning through curriculum development #1 Provide Multiple Means of Representation : Teachers should use variety of ways to present information to students. Technology, text books, verbally, demonstrations, etc. #2 Provide Multiple Means of Expression: Teachers should provide multiple ways for students to present their learning. Technology, art, writing, music, role-playing are a few options. #3 Provide Multiple Means of Engagement: Teachers must learn and be aware of what motivates their students. Knowing what gets them excited and stay engaged. The Science Behind Our Brains…: The Science Behind Our Brains…Parts of our Brains… (The UDL NETWORKS): Parts of our Brains… (The UDL NETWORKS) Recognition Network The WHAT of learning! Location: back of brain Processing of patterns. Sensory organs located. Strategic Network The HOW of learning! Location: front of brain Moves muscles (dance, action), also planning for our actions. Affective Network The WHY of learning! Location: middle of brain. Emotions, evaluate what is important, evaluate patterns.PowerPoint Presentation: Recognition: Patterns Strategic: Plans Affective: Evaluate patternsThe Mixed Classroom: The Mixed Classroom In our schools today the mix of students is more diverse than ever. Educators are challenged to teach all kinds of learners to high standards. An example of a mix of students in a single classroom may be: learning disabilities such as dyslexia, English being a second language, emotional or behavioral problems, lack of interest, sensory or physical disabilities, reading levels 3-5 grades behind, reading levels 2+ years ahead. How can technology help?: How can technology help? Remember the 3 principals of UDL? 1 . Multiple means of representation 2. Multiple means of expression 3. Multiple means of engagement Technology’s role: Technology provides many ways to fulfill all 3 principles of UDL. It allows the teacher to present information, the students to express their learning in a variety of ways and a wonderful way to engage everyone. Why is this important?: Why is this important? This is the 21 st century where technology is being created and upgraded at extraordinary speeds. Because of technology our world is smaller and bursting with information at the tip of our fingers. Our students must learn to handle , sift through and become comfortable with technology for the world outside of school.Examples of technology for students and teachers…: Examples of technology for students and teachers… Powerpoints Smart boards Digital Stories Podcasts Web-quests Voicethreads Wiki Imovies Blogs Laptops Ipods Video camera temperature probes digital pH readersThe Impact UDL Could Have On Our Staff Here At North-western Middle School!: The Impact UDL Could Have On Our Staff Here At North-western Middle School !
