Zante island is linked by car-ferry with the port of Kyllini . There are at least four departures per day. The island of Zakynthos Myth has it that the island was named after the first founder-hero, the Arkadian Zakynthos . It enjoyed a great heyday during the Classical period, but because of its strategic position was attacked many times and captured successively by the Macedonians and the Romans. The main attraction of Laganas is the migration of the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Each year during the months of June, July and August the turtles migrate to the Bay of Laganas to lay their eggs on the beach. This is a protected beach which is watched over by ecologists at all times.
