Hobart Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Tasmania. On 24 November 1642 Abel Tasman sighted the west coast of Tasmania and named his discovery Van Diemen's Land after Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony , Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney.
