Understanding basic statistics in standardized assessment

What is a standardized test? :

What is a standardized test? A test administered and scored in a consistent manner. The tests are designed in such as way that the questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent” and are “administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner.

Standardized Test can be: :

Standardized Test can be: A norm-referenced score interpretations is based on a norm-referenced test or NRTS e.g. sat 10, ADT, and the Slosson intelligence test revised SIT-R A criterion-referenced score interpretations is based on a set of criteria and referred to as CRTs e.g. teacher made tests and Brigance Inventories (sped.

Brigance Inventories :

Brigance Inventories Standardized criterion referenced test: what a kid can do now and what we expect him to do Report: Purpose: tracking mastery of skills specifically for students with special needs. Designed for: secondary programs that serve students with special needs Skills assessed: basic skills (reading comprehension, word analysis, oral reading, graphs, writing, spelling, numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, metric) and applied skills (health and safety, money, vocational, finance, food, clothing, telephone, travel) How are results reported: has objectives for field testing and critiquing the field test edition and in summary form, the meeting of the objectives are described.

Norm-Referenced Test :

Norm-Referenced Test Norm-referenced score interpretations compare test-takers to a SAMPLE OF PEERS. Individual score is compared to the performance of a NORM GROUP Norm-referenced test score interpretations are associated with traditional education, which measures success by rank ordering students using a variety of statistics.

Common stats used in NRT: all of them compare the individual score with the norm group used to standardized a test: all scores represent the same thing :

Common stats used in NRT: all of them compare the individual score with the norm group used to standardized a test: all scores represent the same thing Standard deviation Percentiles Age score Grade score Standard scores: Z and t scores, CEEB, Normal Curve Equivalency, Stanine

Percentiles :

Percentiles Nothing to do with accuracy, just with ordering of scores Never 100 or zero percentile Just known were it stands

SD :

SD Indicates how much a particular score deviates or is different from the average performance of the peers who compose the norm group. What makes SD standard is that the formula for calculating any distribution of score is the same. Know formula.

Z Score :

Z Score Z score is a method for describing a specific location within a distribution of scores. It will allow you to determine the precise location of an individuals score using a simple formula Z equals each score minus the mean divided by the SD A test given in Social Studies has a mean of 50 and an SD 8, what is the z score corresponding to a score of 58? Z: score –mean/ SD

T scores :

T scores T scores have a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10 Formula t score equals the SD times the z score plus = t T score: SD (z score)+50

CEEB Scores :

CEEB Scores Refer to college entrance examination board Uses a mean of 500 and SD of 100

Stanine :

Stanine Pronounced stay nine comes from the contraction of two words: standard and nine Stanine divide the distribution into 9 segments one half SD in width Stanine 5 is .25 SD above and .25 SD below to create the average 5 From this central stanine of 5, three more units each, each one half SD wide are marked off along the upper and lower ends to create the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th stanine-below mean and 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th stanine are above the mean.
