Ask students to talk about their homes and families, some of their practices: what to they eat for dinner most nights? What celebrations do they have throughout the year? What languages do the children speak? Have they ever moved house and moved to a new community? How did they feel? What was different about their new community? What makes a community good? What are good things differences bring to a community? Discuss their experiences starting school. How was their first day? Did people make them feel welcome and included? What can you do to help new students feel included? Why is it important to make a new student feel they are welcome? These photographs were taken in January 2011 and are from my private collection. It is important to teach our next generation to embrace difference. The activities and discussions in my lesson convey to students that our country is a home for everyone, students are encouraged to treat each other e qually, be a friend to all, not to alienate anyone. Difference in these activities is promoted and considered a positive aspect, not viewed as a weakness, not to be feared.
