Who is a child? A child or a juvenile is a person who has not attained 18 years of age. Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children ) Act 2000 (JJ Act 2000, Sec 2 (k) U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989 (CRC) Art. 1

What is Right ?:

What is Right ? A right is a ‘ justified claim or entitlement .’ It is a justified claim on someone, or on some institution, for something which one is owed. “ Rights are those Condition of Social Life without which no man can seek, in general to be himself at his best” Harold J. Laski

Four Basic Child Rights:

Four Basic Child Rights:

Four B asic Child Rights Survival Rights : - rights to life, and provision of needs basic to a child’s existence Protection Rights : - safeguards children are entitled to against all forms of neglect, abuse, exploitation Development Rights : - things children need to achieve their full potential Participation Rights: - rights that allow children to take part in affairs that affect their lives

Right to Participation A child who is capable of forming his/her own views has the right to express own views freely in all matters affecting him/her. (art. 12 CRC)

Responsibilities Rights and Responsibilities are the two sides of same coin Each Right has its Responsibility Right with out responsibility is meaningless Demanding right means fulfilling duties Responsibility creates a conducive environment to fulfill rights Responsibilities means Self-Discipline
