History before the Website:

History before the Website Long Queues for Booking a Railway ticket at the Booking Reservation Office at various Stations. No option to check whether the seats were available. There were PNR Number given on the ticket but no use of it whether the Booking Status has been changed from WL or RAC to CONFIRMED. No option to check which were the Stations coming between 2 different destinations.


Introduction Indian Railways (reporting mark IR) is an Indian state owned enterprise, owned and operated by the government of India through the Ministry of Railways. CONCERT - COUNTRY-WIDE NETWORK FOR COMPUTERIZED ENHANCED RESERVATION AND TICKETING - developed by CRIS , Chanakya Puri, New Delhi, is a total networking solution to Indian Railways Passenger Reservation System. This Software was started at Secunderabad in Sept 1994, New Delhi in Sept 1996, Calcutta in June 1998, Mumbai in Jan 1999, and Chennai in April 1999.

Station Codes:

Station Codes If the user is not aware of the Station Code which is used while searching for the Availability of the Seat, then the Station Code can be retrieved from the below interface.


Fares User can now easily check the ticket fare of any train, just by entering the necessary details and Submitting the page.

Internet Reservation:

Internet Reservation Online Booking of Railway Ticket, it is now the most easiest way to Book a Ticket. User finds it more convenient to use the site instead of going and standing in queue for many hours to get a ticket.

PNR Status:

PNR Status PNR Code is an Unique Code which is displayed in each ticket, and it is mainly used to check the current status of the Booking, like if the Booking is done of WL, then the user could check whether the Booking is Confirmed or not.

Train Running Information:

Train Running Information User can now check where the Train has now reached (which Station), just by entering few information and the desired output would be displayed.

SMS Service – Save Paper:

SMS Service – Save Paper IRCTC have made online eticketing system more user friendly by allowing passengers to check their status of their railway reservations through a SMS service. SMS facility provides various ways to perform enquiries like train alert, IRCTC PNR status, train status, seat availability, train schedule, train information, train time table, train fare etc offered on the Indian Railways website.

Mobile Application:

Mobile Application In a move to offer better services to its customers, IRCTC introduced its IRCTC mobile software using which customers can book their tickets using their mobiles. Not only this, they can also avail other services offered on the IRCTC website including PNR status check, check seat availability , check the fare for a journey and other such information services.
