green revolution- its gift! loss of local indigenous varieties of crops extinction of 1350 breeds of endogenous local crops environmental pollution 20% of global anthropogenic green house gas emission, 70% of all threatened bird species 49% of all plant species, loss of sustainability of soil increased cultivation cost and consequent profit from agriculture

Slide6:

Organic Agriculture is a whole system approach based upon a set of process resulting in a sustainable ecosystem, safe food, good nutrition, animal welfare and social justice. Organic production system therefore is more than a system of production that excludes and includes certain inputs organic agriculture:

basics::

basics: Organic soil management improves soil structure by increasing soil activity, thus reducing the risk of soil erosion. Organic producers looks for the productive varieties suited to their local climate and soil condition and are not susceptible to disease and pest attack. No use of chemical fertilizer. Higher biological activity and higher symbiotic root colonization in soil counteract nutrient deficiency. No use of chemical pest control agents. Disease and pest is controlled by cultural, mechanical and biological methods. With respect to energy consumption, organic agriculture is performing better than conventional agriculture.

environmental issue -01:

environmental issue -01 Application of chemical pesticides not only destroy the pest but also beneficial organisms like predators, pollinators, soil tiller ( earth warms, crickets) etc. Organic Agriculture practices dot not kill the pest population but keeps below the threshold level without effecting the population of beneficial organisms.

environmental issue -02:

environmental issue -02 Soil born pest and diseases are suppressed by wide crop rotations with several components of botanically different crops. Thus diversity in agro-ecosystem is provided by Organic Agriculture

environmental issue -03:

environmental issue -03 Mixed farming, application of crop nutrients through organic ( as manure) and biological (as biofertilizer) develop a wide diversity of soil microorganisms, both functional and structural. Thus ecological processes in soil, like bio geo chemical cycle, soil conservation, water conservation, prevention of loss of nutrients etc., are operated in a better way
