Slide 2:
Christianity began as a new religion of the Jews in Palestine. Jesus, who was born about 4 B.C. was the founder of Christianity. Jesus grew up worshiping God and preaching his words to people around him.
Slide 3:
The teachings of Jesus strongly encouraged the belief in one God and the following of the Ten Commandments.
Slide 4:
After Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples and was crucified, his apostles and other disciples spread his message and helped establish Christian communities throughout the Roman world.
Slide 5:
However, Rome was not very tolerant of Christianity at first. Roman officials believed that Christians were disloyal to Rome because they refused to honor the Roman gods or make sacrifices to the emperor.

As this persecution increased, thousands of Christians became martyrs and were even killed.
Slide 8:
Even though there were numerous attacks on Christianity, it still continued to spread. In fact, it became easier for missionaries such as Paul to convert people to Christianity when the Roman Empire was united.
Slide 9:
Finally, in A.D. 313, when the emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, the persecution of Christians ended. Gradually, each Christian community had its own priest, and communities began to organize structured churches.
