How to Learn Piano Patterns

PowerPoint Presentation:

Music is patterns of sound, and nowhere is this clearer than on the piano. Unlike other instruments , the piano has clearly visible patterns, starting with the repeating octaves and the pattern of alternating sets of two and three black keys that clearly mark the intervals between notes within the octave. One of the great advantages of the piano is that it makes musical patterns visible.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Start learning piano patterns (scales, arpeggios, etc.) one hand at a time. Learn the pattern with one hand ascending through the octaves that are comfortable for that hand. Then learn the pattern descending for the same hand over the same octaves. Switch hands and do the same thing until the pattern becomes smooth for both hands in both directions.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Practice in triplet rhythm. Find the natural turnaround point for triplets for the pattern you want to learn. For example, if you are learning the C major scale, then start the triplets on C, and ascend three octaves before the next triplet starts on a C. ractice major, minor, and blues scales or any other seven-note pattern up and down a three- ctave stretch in triplets. You'll know when you are playing correctly--the triplets will fall correctly over the three octave range. Practice this with each hand.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Play with both hands. Play the patterns you have been learning for each hand, but play them both at the same time. This will be slow at first, but with practice, you'll be able to go faster.
