My High School Scrapbook by Russell Beck 2/05/2011:

My High School Scrapbook by Russell Beck 2/05/2011 I went to Cathedral High School, a private, Catholic, all-boys high school in Indianapolis, Indiana from 1962-1966. The school was downtown and boys came from all over the city; tuition then was about $275 per year. Today Cathedral is co-ed, it’s moved to the NE side of town, it’s not run by the Brothers of Holy Cross and the tuition is about $11,000 per year.

My acceptance letter from Cathedral. You took a test in the eighth grade and your score determined your course of study for the next four years.:

There was lots of excitement off the field as well. Griff’s dad gave him this jeep, he could just as well given him a million dollars. We had great times and went everywhere in this thing. You may notice it’s painted camouflage blue and gold.

Every week there was a new crop of posters bashing the up-coming team. Every day there were a few more until Friday when the place was covered. This crew was responsible for the mayhem.:

Since there were no girls at our school, Mr. Bowman our drama director, asked me to play one. He said my performance almost cost him his job. I said it was a wardrobe malfunction.

Because it was a Catholic school we had religion classes every school day and we often attended Mass. One of the special things I remember was when the School went on a “Retreat”. This was three days of silence, prayer and meditation. Strange as it seems I still remember how much I learned to enjoy that time.

After football we started the wrestling season.:

After football we started the wrestling season. The football coaches insisted that I go out for wrestling. I saw these guys sweating weight in steam suits and it looked like hell. But ahead I went and after the first brutal year of getting my butt mutilated by Forest McBain, a senior and the only other heavyweight, I loved it.

My career record was 77-7. My senior year I was 22-0 until I dislocated my shoulder with a silly show-off move in the sectionals. Clarence Price, who I’d defeated a couple of times became the state champion.:

In the spring of my senior year I started getting letters like these from coaches who perhaps found it easier than the telephone. I do vaguely remember the banquet, but was interested in getting as far from Indianapolis as possible. That turned out to be Buffalo. Wish I’d picked someplace warmer. :

My grades were never that great even though I did about two hours of homework every school night. Really! Notice the grades for Band. I played trumpet for four years. :

I had a lot of girlfriends after I learned to drive. These are the only two whose pictures survived. I loved being able to date several girls at the same time and not have all the drama and gossip that goes along with dating a girl within your own school. It was liberating.:

For a short while I thought I might be going to Notre Dame. I did have a nice trip.

Then I received the bad news.

But things were in the works for something else. Dr. Ulrich who recruited me at Notre Dame became the head coach At UB.

We signed each others yearbooks with the sort of earth shattering comments you see before you. It was more legible and tended to last longer. Today’s trend toward writing on shirts, never caught on in my time.:
