There are many learning tools available today for musicians such as books and instructional DVDs. However many fast track type teaching methods cannot replace the basic requirement of building good technique. Each individual progresses at a different pace so therefore the smartest choice in learning classical piano would be with the aid of a teacher. As classical pianist Shani Lloyd Roberts states, "I would say the quickest way to learn this skill is to find a recommended piano teacher who can put in many hours to help you begin and keep a watchful eye on your technique and note reading."

Hone Basic Skills With Books Use a beginners classical piano book (available at music retail stores or online retailers). Begin by memorizing the notes on the piano and by playing basic chords and scales. Use classical preparatory exercise books to begin building technique required to play classical pieces. If you are not an adept reader, use a book such as "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course : Sight Reading " to hone your reading skills before using the classical books.

Play One Small Section at a Time Learn a piece of music that you enjoy listening to. Use a book and slowly play only the first two or three bars of the piece. Pay attention to correctly reading each note and ensure the piece sounds exactly as it should by referring to a recording of it or if the book contains a CD by referencing it. Ensure the first few bars are absolutely perfect before moving on to the next few bars. Slowly work your way through the first page and play the piece from the beginning each time as repetition improves muscle memory and technique.

Find a Patient, Competent Piano Teacher Find a good teacher to ensure your technique, reading and performance abilities are developing correctly. Teachers also prevent the acquisition of bad practice habits. Contact local music stores that offer piano lessons.
