Who Are The Jesuits? Society of Jesus Religious Order started in the mid-1500’s by Ignatius Loyola. Jesuits focused on evangelization; primarily through education. Today there are more than 130 Jesuit Universities worldwide. Boston College, Creighton, Georgetown, Gonzaga, & Regis.
John Francis Regis:
John Francis Regis Born January 31, 1597, in the village of Fontcouverte, France. Especially noted in his early life for his obedience & desire to please his parents! Went to a Jesuit College and afterwards joined the Jesuits in 1616—ordained a priest in 1631.
John Francis Regis Courageous Servant of God:
John Francis Regis Courageous Servant of God 1630 Plague epidemic John went and cared for the sick. His friend and fellow priest died.
Teacher & Preacher:
Teacher & Preacher Taught in College but also went out into the city to preach! Went to the poorest & most dangerous cities of France to preach & hear confessions; often climbing mountains to reach cities. His life was threatened on several occasions but he was miraculously saved!
St. Regis:
St. Regis December 1640 traveled to a remote villae of France during a violent snowstorm. Celebrated Christmas Mass and heard confessions for almost 2 days straight! Collapsed on December 27 th & died December 30, 1640. “Brother, I see our Lord and Our Lady opening the gates of paradise for me…”
St. Regis:
St. Regis Miraculous spring near his tomb. Canonized in 1737.
