EPIDEMIOLOGY :

EPIDEMIOLOGY BY ROSEMARY PALMER RN, RM, BSc Hons (Sport science & administration), ADM

DEFINITION :

DEFINITION Study of the incidence, distribution and possible control of diseases and other factors relating to health

Slide 3:

Statistics are used to see what is causing disease prevalance and what can be done about it. We use statistics e.g. maternal deaths, perinatal deaths etc. These are used to determine if there are factors that are occurring that are avoidable and how to avoid them e.g. guidelines or protocols.

PERINATAL MORTALITY RATE (PMR) :

PERINATAL MORTALITY RATE (PMR) ENND = < 7 days old LNND=> 7 days -28th day. FSB = stillbirth with no signs of maceration. Was live before delivery. PMR= FSB+MSB+ENND x1000 Total number of births Neonatal mortality rate = ENND + LNND x 1000 Total number births

Slide 5:

Stillbirth rate = MSB + FSB x 1000 Total number deliveries

MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO :

MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO Number of maternal deaths x 100 000 Number of women pregnant Different from Maternal Mortality Rate.

CAESARIAN SECTION RATE :

CAESARIAN SECTION RATE Number of caesarian sections performed x 100 Number of LIVE births
