Cultural context, language problems. ANXIETY- can I cope? What about work? There should be some anxiety to unknown –a warning sign if there is nothing as adjustment is not going according to plan. FEAR- life? Will I die? Not ‘at home’ at time of conception/ Can I trust attendants/ relatives/ what if someone finds out I am pregnant? Slide 3: SEXUALITY- he will go to another woman. I am no longer attractive. Cant have intercourse whilst pregnant- cultural expectatiions EMOTIONALITY- mood swings cause prblems with partner/ relatives. Cant understand you. Talk all the time about pregnancy/ babies 7 become introspective. PHYSICAL ADAPTION- nausea/ vomiting/ weight gain/ heartburn etc etc MANS REACTION : MANS REACTION Walk away if unplanned. Cant understand partners mood wings/ worries. Finds partner unattractive. Some men find pregnant woman very attractive. Sexuality –can we still have intercourse/ Tired, especially when working as well. SIBLING REACTIONS : SIBLING REACTIONS Jealousy. Care must be taken to include sibling/s right from beginning. Explain, talk show. Puerperium most difficult as sibling might not get the concept of a newborn before birth but sees it afterwards taking up a lot of mothers time. Mum is also tired to deal with another child + newborn. Fathers support very important with this. GRANDMOTHER : GRANDMOTHER Grandmother often important person to help out before and after birth. Offer support and do physical bits to help. Cultural expectations take front line role here. FRIENDS REACTIONS : FRIENDS REACTIONS Happy for you/ jealous. Shocked as unplanned –discard you. Love own horror stories- can cause anxiety. LABOUR : LABOUR CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS come to the fore- e.g.shaving, enemas, doula, PV’s, CTG, pain relief. DIFFICULT patient if unplanned/ rape/ don’t want baby etc. Need extra counselling & care. REACTIONS to unexpected occurrences e.g. c/s v/e. Dislike of medicalisation of birth.
