Having originally undertaken the masterplan design for Dubai’s successful IRB World Cup 2009 bid in Feb 2007. Emirates were then informed that the Existing Dubai Exiles Rugby grounds were to be redeveloped as part of the Meydan development which meant a new site had to be located. The site on the Al Ain Road was acquired in early May 2007 but now the programme was even tighter as the Dubai Rugby 7’s needed to take place in November 2008, meaning an 18 month design and construction phase, and no dress rehearsal until 52,000 fans arrived on the day..! Actual physical site construction commenced in February 2008, but a separate contract for the initial two rugby pitches was awarded in November 2007 to allow local teams to play from February 2008 as the Exiles site had been taken back by Dubai Government. © 2009 All Rights Reserved R&R Design Background

R&R Design / Emirates 7he Sevens The original approved design proved to be too difficult and expensive to build in the time allowed. Therefore the client decided to build only the first tier but include the infrastructure and services for when the remaining two levels are added.

Slide 12:

R&R Design / Emirates 7he Sevens – Concept Design Model November 2007 Once the initial concept sketches and master plan had been agreed, Emirates requested that a Model be constructed so that this could be displayed at the 2007 Sevens. The purpose of this was to not only show the public and worlds press the new development but also to show Emirates commitment to the local Rugby community by constructing the Players club FOC.

By March the ground works for the site were also under way and Rob & John moved to site, Rob had a few initial problems…!! R&R Design / Emirates 7he Sevens – Feb / March 2008

R&R Design / Emirates 7he Sevens – Site Sept 23rd 2008 By September 2008 not only was the heat on from the weather but site was starting to move at pace. The Clubhouse roof was being tiled (not as fast as it could’ve been) but the never ending ground works still had a long way to go and would still be being completed hours before the 7’s went live.

Slide 18:

On the 23rd September we undertook a full walk round of the site prior to a visit from the IRB to check progress. R&R Design / Emirates 7he Sevens – Site Sept 23rd 2008
