An intro Birth of H.M.T. In 1953, HINDUSTAN MACHINE TOOLS started as a single factory to produce lathes at Bangalore in collaboration with M/s OERLIKON of SWITZERLAND. The second unit was setup in Bangalore in 1959 making use of company’s own measures. The third unit was setup in 1963 at Pinjore to produce Milling machine.

LIGHT MACHINE SHOP As the name shows, all the light parts of tractors such as differential housing, power take off shafts, splined shafts, gears, rear wheel driving hubs, portal shafts, main transmission shafts etc. are machined here.

CRANK CASE:

CRANK CASE It is made of cast iron. Other parts of the engine are directly or indirectly attached to it. It is equipped with holes, by which the engine may be firmly anchored to its foundation.

CYLINDER:

CYLINDER Cylinders are made of high-grade grey cast iron. It act as combustion chamber for the engine. Piston reciprocate in it.

PISTON & CONNECTING ROD:

PISTON & CONNECTING ROD Piston of an engine move back and forth in the cylinder owing to the explosion of the fuel mixture. Piston is surrounded by piston rings which prevent the friction losses. Connecting rod connects the piston and crank shaft.

CRANK SHAFT:

CRANK SHAFT It is generally made of alloy steel. It is enclosed in crank case. It converts reciprocating motion into rotary motion.

CAM SHAFT:

CAM SHAFT It control the opening and closing of inlet and exhaust valve. It is driven by the crank shaft through gears. The associated parts are push rod, rocker arm, valve springs and tappets.

FLY WHEEL:

FLY WHEEL It help in maintaining a uniform engine speed. It reduces vibration and wear in the engine. Uniformity of speed is maintained by the inertia of the heavy flywheel.

ENGINE TESTING After assembly, engine is brought to engine testing section. In this section practical checking of engine is done on engine and water supply is connected to it, then the engine is started with the external DC supply. After this, the proper operating of valves is done, the engine is kept running for two hrs. During running the load is also varied and various properties like lubricating oil pressure, load capacity, fuel consumption etc is checked.

The lubricating oil pressure in the engine should be 3.8 to 4.2 kg/cm2. For proper working, load capacity of engine is checked by applying load on the shaft of the engine through water. The max RPM of the engine shaft is 2200. Supplying a measured quantity of fuel usually checks the fuel consumption of the engine, 100cc of diesel or fuel is supplied to the engine. The time taken by the engine to consume the fuel is noted.
