Poetry has its own form:Poetry has its own form Different form than fiction Poetic license Syllables Feet Lines Stanzas


Building Blocks of Poetry:Building Blocks of Poetry Foot Pattern of syllables that create the meter of a poem Iamb, trochee, anapest, dactyl, spondee… Line The number of feet in a poetic line Unlike a sentence that is determined by a subject, verb, and punctuation. Monometer, dimeter, trimeter, tetrameter… Stanza Formed by a grouping of lines. A line, couplet, tercet, quatrain, quintain…


Rhyme Scheme:Rhyme Scheme Establish each rhyme ending with a letter of the alphabet starting with the letter ‘A’ This helps you see a pattern in the rhyme scheme. The Sick Rose O rose, thou art sick, A The invisible worm B That flies in the night C In the howling storm B BLAKE


Types of Poetry:Types of Poetry Narrative Poetry Tells stories Ballads Simple narratives Lyric Subjective and emotional Odes Fomral lyrics that honor something or someone Elegies Lyrics that mourn the dead or a loss Dramatic Monologues Converse withteh reader as they reveal events Sonnets 14 line form of poetry (Shakespearean and Italian) Villanelles Fixed form that depends on refrains
