The medium of instruction is English and there are a variety of courses offered. In addition to preparation for the International TOEFL and SAT examinations, the ABP offers courses in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking, university lecture and note taking, algebra, calculus, physics, chemistry, biology, critical thinking and research. All courses are designed to help students master the communication skills needed to do well at the university level. An important goal of the ABP is to produce a qualitative shift in the learning styles of the students - to steer them away from rote learning and to encourage them to become self-reliant, independent thinkers. These goals can be achieved with effective learning strategies using communicative activities and interactive techniques that place the students, rather than the instructor, at the core of the educational process. In this model, the teacher’s role becomes that of a guide and a facilitator. Such strategies are important to increase student interaction, foster creativity, and encourage students to gain self-confidence. In short, the ABP is a dynamic educational program that strives to bridge the gap between high school and university studies. Further, it helps students acquire the skills that will enable them to make a difference in their society and the world at large. Slide 3: Message from ABP Director, Dr. Miles Lovelace From Dr. Miles ABP Director To the Graduates of the 8th Year of the ABP: The 2008-2009 school year has been an exceptional success in many ways. First, we had the largest pool of applicants in history (550+) and the largest enrollment in many years with 308 students starting in August. Second, we had the largest number of ABP students enrolled in Education City classes this year (about 75 in total, counting both semesters). Third, we continued our athletic success of last year, winning third place in the Education City soccer tournament. Fourth, we had the largest number ever of ABP students admitted to Education City universities (at least 70 admissions with some students getting two or three admissions, with others on the waiting lists). Fifth, at least 50 ABP students have applied to USA and UK universities (with the results not yet in), and dozens of ABP students will enroll at Qatar University next year. But the numbers alone do not tell the story of ABP’s achievements. The best measure of the ABP’s success was the alumni night on April 20 when scores of former students gathered with current students to acknowledge the many ways in which the ABP had prepared them for university life and success. Having graduates of the previous seven ABP classes come back to tell this year’s class of ABP students how well prepared they were for university experiences in Education City, England, and the United States is the best possible testimony for what all of the faculty and staff and administration of the ABP strive for. Now that this eighth class has finished the year, you join the ranks of almost 1000 graduates of the ABP, mostly Qataris. You all have wonderful opportunities before you because the ABP has served as a bridge to your futures. You will always be a part of the ABP family. Thanks for a job well done! Slide 4: Message from Assistant Director, Student Services Coordinator, Dr. Shetha Al Numan Dear Raba” Al ABP Al Salam Alaikum I am writing to you today to say good luck, and not goodbye. As I believe that our relationship will continue forever. I am very optimistic and I believe that within few years you will get you degree and hold distinguished positions and contribute to the progress and prosperity of your beloved country Qatar. This year was very special to me and to all ABP members as we got to know many of you during this fruitful academic year.
