Founder of Vedas :Founder of Vedas The word Veda is derived from the Sanskrit word “vid” = which means to know. Veda Vyasa was the son of Sage Parashara and Satyavati. His real name was Krishna Dwaipayana because he was dark skinned and born on an island. He was the biological father of Dhritarashtra and Pandu, whose sons fought the Mahabharata war. He got the name Veda Vyasa because he compiled the Vedas into the four groups – Riga, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. He was also the author of the epic Mahabharata and the Purana Srimad Bhagavata.

The Rig-Vedic ‘samhita’ or collection of mantras consists of : 1,017 hymns or ‘suktas’, covering about 10,600 stanzas, divided into eight ‘astakas’ each having eight ‘adhayayas’ or chapters, which are sub-divided into various groups. The hymns are the work of many authors or seers called ‘rishis’.
