Progression of Marriage throughout the Ages…. "In the Greco-Roman world, marriage and the begetting of children were considered a duty one owed to the Roman state.” Men married to establish a family, produce heirs to carry on the family name and fortune, and to provide citizens to maintain the Roman state (Jersild, Johnson, Jung, Jung, 1998, p.59).

Reformation (16th C) : 

Reformation (16th C) The church gained control on relationships by asserting the only marital sex that was good and allowed was sex that was “procreative in its' function”. It was up until Vatican Two that the Roman church taught that “ procreation was the primary aim of marriage [not love]” (Jersild, et, al, pg. 59).

19th century: 

19th century It was only in the 19th century with the rise of capitalism that marriage was redefined as "a contract between two adults who pledged to build a life together on the basis of conjugal love and a desire for companionship" (Ellison, 2004, p. 18).

Across cultures and across the ages there is a trend that women are objects to be given away during marriage. In modern marriages, women still agree and promise both to be obedient to her husband.

What about today?: 

What about today? Many criticizers of religion in general believe that it is very sexist in nature. Many couples struggle with the changing times but also the desire to keep both religious and family tradition.
