World Class Manufacturing:

World Class Manufacturing Pros and Cons of by-passing a stockroom? Is it good as an early JIT action, or are there serious risks? Presented By- Rohan Dange (03) Nisarg Karnik (04)

What does By-passing a Stockroom mean?:

What does By-passing a Stockroom mean? Dock-to-Receiving-to-IQC-to-Warehouse-to-Production In most plants incoming of parts, a slow and expensive procedure starts in the receiving department (where they are logged in), Then to the incoming quality control (IQC) department (where they are inspected), Then to the raw material warehouse (where they are stored), and then to the production or assembly lines.

What does By-passing a Stockroom mean?:

What does By-passing a Stockroom mean? Dock-to-Production Direct delivery to production or assembly. which technically means parts go to some kind of internal storage location near assembly area, without incoming inspection, before being distributed to the line.

Case Situation:

Case Situation By-Passing Stockroom Press M/c Press M/c Point of use delivery in future Sheet Metal from Japan

Benefits of By-passing a stockroom:

Benefits of By-passing a stockroom Less material movement and thus improved throughput Reduced Inventory carrying cost Operator replenishes their workstation from point-of-use location reduces many transactions Simplifies material handling No need of incoming inspection Less Paperwork and transactions

Potential Dangers in By-passing a Stockroom as an early JIT action:

Potential Dangers in By-passing a Stockroom as an early JIT action Direct delivery of materials to assembly requires high degree of discipline at vendor end A big paradigm shift required is the elimination of incoming inspections of parts and raw materials. Finding errors and determining their root causes is very difficult Handling damages Transportation damages Process Variations at supplier end Problems found on production line may result in slowing down production pace and often stoppages. Delivery of matched sets of components from different suppliers to assembly area not practicable Stockrooms often perform minor operations to prepare material for production
