What is ShakeOut? : 

What is ShakeOut? The Great California ShakeOut is an annual statewide earthquake drill on the third Thursday of October Millions of people practice… October 21, 2010 at 10:21 a.m.

Why ShakeOut? : 

Why ShakeOut? California is earthquake country. An earthquake can happen at any time! Red and yellow areas will have strong, frequent shaking LosAngeles Bay Area San LuisObispo SLO County has many fault lines, including the San Andreas Fault

During an Earthquake : 

During an Earthquake You only have seconds. Do you know exactly what to do themoment the ground starts shaking? Does not protect from falling objects and you may get knocked off your feet.Also, the door may swing and hit you. If it involves: You are safer under, not next to a table or desk. Will increase your chances of injury. X X What are Quake-Safe Actions? X These are NOT Quake-Safe Actions!

Indoor Quake-Safe Actions : 

Indoor Quake-Safe Actions Stay indoors Be aware of safe places in every room to Drop, Cover, and Hold On Drop to the floor Before the earthquake drops you! Take Cover Under a sturdy desk or table Or get down next to an interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms Hold On to it firmly Be ready to move with it until the shaking stops Avoid exterior walls, windows, and heavy furniture that could fall In California, injuries are more likely to occur from falling or flying objects than collapsed buildings

In Bed Quake-Safe Actions : 

In Bed Quake-Safe Actions Stay in bed and protect your head with a pillow Keep heavy shoes and a flashlight nearby You are less likely to be injured staying where you are

Outside Quake-Safe Actions : 

Move to an open area if you can safely do so Avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings, vehicles, overpasses, and other hazards Drop and cover your head with your hands Outside Quake-Safe Actions

Driving Quake-Safe Actions : 

Safely pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set the parking break Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs, and other hazards Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over Driving Quake-Safe Actions

Individuals In Wheelchairs Quake-Safe Actions : 

Move to cover, stay there, lock wheels, and protect your head and neck Individuals In Wheelchairs Quake-Safe Actions

Tsunami Hazard Zone Quake-Safe Actions : 

Tsunami Hazard Zone Quake-Safe Actions Drop, Cover, and Hold On until the shaking stops If severe shaking lasts 20 seconds or more, a tsunami might have been generated Other Warning Signs Unusual disappearance of ocean water Hear a load ocean roar If a tsunami occurs, keep calm and immediately move inland and/or to higher ground Do NOT go sightseeing and stay away from coastal areas

Develop a Family Disaster Plan : 

Develop a Family Disaster Plan Designate an out-of-state contact Long-distance calls may get through congested local networks Text messaging may also be able to get around network disruptions Establish two meeting places where you and your family can gather following a disaster One immediately outside your home (e.g. a neighbor’s mailbox) One outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home Know the locations of utility shutoffs and how to turn them off Do not shut off the gas unless you suspect a leak exists Know your child’s School Disaster Plan How will they communicate with families during a crisis Ensure they have your current contact information Practice your disaster plan!

Make Emergency Supplies Kits for Your Home, Work, and Car Your emergency supplies should be sufficient to sustain you, your family, and pets for a minimum of 3 days. A two week supply of medications is recommended. Emergency Supplies Kits should include Kits can be made or purchased from a private vendor such as the American Red Cross Water – one gallon per person per day Food – non-perishable and easy-to-prepare First aid kit and manual Prescription and over-the-counter medications Flashlight with extra batteries Battery powered NOAA Weather Radio ABC Fire Extinguisher Basic plug-in telephone Sanitation and personal hygiene supplies Cooking supplies Copies of important documents Cash is small denominations Provisions for pets

Take Action During ShakeOut : 

Take Action During ShakeOut Finally, practice what you would do after the shaking stops. October 21, 2010 at 10:21 a.m. Drop to the ground Take Cover under a desk or table Hold On for at least 60 seconds While on the ground, look around and imagine what would be happening. What could fall on you? What would be damaged?
