What are Faculty Learning Communities?

A working definition: : 

A working definition: A faculty learning community (FLC) is a group of trans-disciplinary faculty, graduate students and professional staff in a group the size of 6-15 or more engaging in an active, collaborative, yearlong program with a curriculum about enhancing teaching and learning and with frequent seminars and activities that provide learning, development, trans-disciplinarity, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and community building.

Why develop FLCs? : 

Why develop FLCs? To improve teaching skills To improve teaching/learning environments To improve student outcomes To share knowledge, skills, and ideas with colleagues To create system-wide networks which support ongoing professional development

Everywhere! In 2009-10, FLCs ranged from the very specific: Rethinking developmental math Yakima Valley Community College Math Department Which made it relatively easy to have face-to-face meetings…

To FLC topics of broad interest and participation: : 

To FLC topics of broad interest and participation: Universal Design for Learning: face-to-face, online, and hybrid Participants included faculty and staff from: North Seattle, Bellevue, Olympic, Edmonds, U. of W., Eastern W.U., Everett, Lake Washington, Pierce, Skagit, South Puget Sound Renton, Seattle Central, Art Institute of WA, Seattle Pacific, UW Do-IT, Spokane CC, Spokane IEL-Colville, Highline, Clover Park, and Whitman, and others… (Obviously, they held their meetings online!)

A collaborative funding effort:SBCTC Education Division Adult Basic Education Assessment, Teaching and Learning eLearning Workforce Each of these SBCTC offices is contributing funding to support Faculty Learning Communities across disciplines, across departments, and across the state.

Available for 2010-11 :
