ADHD can be treated by various methods and medications. The three most common used medications used are: Ritalin, Concerta , and Strattera.Advantages of these medications: Advantages of these medicationsRitalin: Ritalin Fast acting medication know as a stimulant. Meatbolized by the body quickly Medication produces desired effect quickly.Concerta: Concerta Medication is a stimulant This drug has a longer half life meaning medication is metabolized slower. Desired effect lasts longer than traditional stimulants Still acts quicklyStrattera: Strattera Non stimulant and is the first of its kind. Strattera takes effect and wears off more evenly than stimulants. Does not cause agitation or sleeplessness like stimulantsDisadvantages: DisadvantagesRitalin and Concerta: Ritalin and Concerta Both are stimulants which are a controlled substance which is regulated closely. Can be highly addictive. Have many side effects: nervousness, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, and blurred vision.Strattera: Strattera Have many side effects: nervousness, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, and blurred vision . May cause sexual dysfunction.Special Precautions: Special PrecautionsRitalin and Concerta: Ritalin and Concerta Not recommended for patients with history of alcohol, drug problems or addictive behavior. Can be highly addictive. Not recommended for patients with heart conditions or high blood pressure. May cause stroke in these patients. Some patients may have a serious allergic reaction.Strattera: Strattera May cause jaundice and liver dysfunction. May cause increase suicidal thoughts in some. Strattera may cause slow growth in children. Could cause patients to have an erection to last more than four hours.
