Slide 8:

How we define leadershipwill determine thekind of small group leaderswe will develop.

Three aspects of leadership :

Three aspects of leadership Authority – the right or power to do something Accountability – the scope of activity that you will answer for (i.e. explain, defend, or accept blame for) Responsibility – that which you can and must do by yourself

Three aspects of leadership :

Three aspects of leadership Authority – always delegated, always limited, and must always be respected Accountability – the scope of activity that you will answer for (i.e. explain, defend, or accept blame for) Responsibility – that which you can and must do by yourself

Three aspects of leadership :

Three aspects of leadership Authority – always delegated, always limited, and must always be respected Accountability – equal to authority, greater than one’s responsibility, and toward a higher authority Responsibility – that which you can and must do by yourself

Three aspects of leadership Authority – always delegated, always limited, and must always be respected Accountability – equal to authority, greater than one’s responsibility, and toward a higher authority Responsibility – always personal, always practical, and always prioritized

Leadership is all about decisions :

Leadership is all about decisions Do you have the “authority” to decide? Are you “accountable” for this decision? Should you be the only one “responsible” for this decision? “Just because you have the authority to decide and are accountable for the decision do not mean that you are solely responsible for the decision.”

Slide 14:

Slide 20:

Five Levels of Leadership Authority and Accountability will increase as you go up Authority, Accountability, and Responsibility must be shared

Exodus 18:17-23 :

Exodus 18:17-23 17 Moses' father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.”

Exodus 18:17-23 :

Exodus 18:17-23 19 “Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.”

Exodus 18:17-23 :

Exodus 18:17-23 21 “But select capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain – and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.”

Exodus 18:17-23 :

Exodus 18:17-23 23 “If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”

Mark 10:42-45 :

Mark 10:42-45 42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Acts 1:23-26 :

Acts 1:23-26 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Acts 4:34-35 :

Acts 4:34-35 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

Acts 6:3-4 :

Acts 6:3-4 3 “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Acts 11:1-4 :

Acts 11:1-4 1 The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him 3 and said, "You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them." 4 Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened…

Acts 13:2-3 :

Acts 13:2-3 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

Acts 14:23 :

Acts 14:23 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

Acts 15:22-23, 28 :

Acts 15:22-23, 28 22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers. 23 With them they sent the following letter… 28 “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements…”

Acts 20:28, 32 :

Acts 20:28, 32 28 “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood… 32 Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

Slide 34:

Leadership By Many When it comes to clarifying values and beliefs When it comes to setting parameters or guidelines When it comes to holding others accountable (discipline)

Slide 35:

Leadership By One? When it comes to fulfilling one’s responsibilities When it comes to doing ministry for others When it comes to obeying God’s guidance or God’s will as one understands it

Slide 36:

What kind of small groupleader should we develop?

Someone who can… :

Someone who can… GUIDE a collection of individuals to become a real group. MOBILIZE a real group to serve as a ministry team. SPOT and TRAIN new leaders and SEND them out as a team.

Group Discussion :

Group Discussion Why is it important to define your leadership philosophy? What is your “take-away insight” about leadership from this session? How does this affect the way you view leadership development for the small groups from now on?
