40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:40-42)

Slide 11:

People are disconnected 1

Root Causes of Disconnection:

Root Causes of Disconnection Separation from God Romans 1:28-31 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity .

Root Causes of Disconnection:

Root Causes of Disconnection Separation from God Romans 1:28-31 They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Root Causes of Disconnection:

Root Causes of Disconnection Individualism 2 Timothy 3:1-5 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy…

Root Causes of Disconnection:

Root Causes of Disconnection Individualism 2 Timothy 3:1-5 3 …without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God -- 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

People need connection 2

Slide 19:

We are created for it. Genesis 2:18 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Slide 20:

We are attracted to it. Acts 2:46-47 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Slide 22:

We are affected by it. 1 Corinthians 15:33 33 Do not be misled : "Bad company corrupts good character."

Slide 23:

We are affected by it. Philippians 3:17 17 Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.

Slide 25:

We are CHANGed thru it. Ephesians 4:15-16 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Slide 28:

We are commanded TO PURSUE it. Philippians 2:1-2 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose .

Slide 29:

PRINCIPLE NO. 5 It takes a genuine community to grow a Christian. Without a community a Christian cannot grow toward spiritual maturity .

Slide 30:

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Eph 4:14-16)

Slide 31:

JOHARI WINDOW Known by self Not known by self Known by others Not known by others Open Self Blind Self Hidden Self Unknown Self FEEDBACK DISCLOSURE Unknown Self Self Awareness and Growth

Slide 32:

PRINCIPLE NO. 5 It takes a genuine community to grow a Christian. Individualistic Christians are the result of neglecting the principle of community, either by the leaders or by the members.

Slide 33:

1 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos ,” are you not mere human beings? (1 Cor 3:1-4)

Slide 34:

PRINCIPLE NO. 6 Assimilation is a process , not an event . People do not just become members of local churches; they must be assimilated .

Slide 35:

26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. (Acts 9:26)

Slide 36:

It’s an emotional process fear guilt pride anger uncertainty

Slide 37:

It’s a psychological process “I like the stage design.” “The people are friendly.” “The preacher talks fast.”

Slide 38:

It’s a spiritual process Acts 5:12-14 12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.

Slide 40:

It’s a temporal process John 4:35-38 35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." It takes time!

Slide 41:

is a personal process Assimilation

Slide 42:

PRINCIPLE NO. 6 Assimilation is a process , not an event . Assimilation must be intentional , not accidental .

Slide 43:

27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. (Acts 9:27)

How a person “assimilates” himself/herself:

How a person “assimilates” himself/herself He/she IDENTIFIES himself/herself with our church He/she ACQUAINTS himself/herself with some members of our church He/she OPENS himself/herself with a few members of our church He/she UNITES himself/herself with the vision and purpose of our church WORSHIP SERVICE FELLOWSHIP SMALL GROUP MINISTRY TEAM INVOLVEMENT

Slide 45:

PRINCIPLE NO. 6 Assimilation is a process , not an event . Unless they are assimilated properly , believers will fall away naturally .

Slide 46:

29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. (Acts 20:29-31)

Verifying their spiritual status:

Verifying their spiritual status S1 - Skeptics Allergic to spiritual matters; hostile to God & to you S2 - Spectators Seem to be open but will not commit S3 - Seekers Searching for truth (but can be misguided) Example: Samaritan woman (John 4) S4 - Saved Have personal relationship with Christ (can be churched or unchurched )  Be salt and light to them  Challenge them to seek God  Clarify the truth and persuade them  Challenge them to belong

Slide 48:

Christian community is reaching out with supernatural power into the depths of each other’s heart so that the evil that rules there, which is so often unrecognized, and damages our relationships, is clearly identified and exposed as hateful to the Holy Spirit, and His love is given full sway to reveal the glory of God.
