Android an open source technology The primary purposes of Android is to create an open software platform available for carriers, OEMs, and developers to make their innovative ideas a reality and to introduce a successful, real-world product that improves the mobile experience for users. They also wanted to make sure there was no central point of failure, where one industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other. The result is a full, production-quality consumer product with source code open for customization and porting. Fig 3.0

Advantages of open source technology:

Advantages of open source technology Advantages 1. Lower total cost of ownership. 2. Reduced dependence on software vendors. 3. Open source software gives you the power to control your software’s code. You have the rights to modify the code to suit your requirements. 4. Anyone can easily modify the code of software to produce a new featured software from existing one or to reduce functionalities of existing one

Disadvantages of open source:

Disadvantages of open source 1. Most open source software are not reliable. 2. No guarantee of updates since you are not paying for the open source software nobody is bound to give you regular updates .You can get Stuck with the same old version for years without ever getting an update. 3. No one is bound with you for maintenance and support like as legal software vendors , If any error in working of software occurs. 4. No warranties regarding to viruses and performance.

Conclusion:

Conclusion Although open source software is often free to download and use, open source licenses rarely transfer any ownership of the software to the end user or developer. Open source is not limited to software. Open source philosophies have been applied to everything from medicine to soft drink formulas.
