The School Committee reviews each application and votes.
The committee chair records the vote tally for each application and transmits it with appropriate comments to the School Dean.
School Dean
The Dean reviews all information on each candidate and makes a written recommendation and report which is forwarded to the Provost.
A copy of this report is also forwarded to the candidate. Page 18

Reviews all recommendations for promotion and tenure and makes recommendations to the President.
The Provost notifies the candidate after a decision has been reached.

makes recommendations to the board of Trustees for tenured appointments

Takes action on all recommended tenure applications
Granting of tenure requires an affirmative action of the Board

Q: Should I complete an application packet if I do not meet all of the criteria (e.g. Research and Scholarship) for promotion and tenure? :Q: Should I complete an application packet if I do not meet all of the criteria (e.g. Research and Scholarship) for promotion and tenure? A: Yes. If you are in your sixth probationary year of a tenure track appointment, you must apply for tenure. Instructors in the third-year of appointment must apply for promotion. Limited activity in an area such as research should be explained and current or future research plans described in the designated section (III). Page 23

A: No. To satisfy the criterion of an earned doctorate for promotion and /or tenure, the doctorate must be in the applicant’s teaching field. Page 24
Q: Does the material for promotion and tenure have to be bound? :Q: Does the material for promotion and tenure have to be bound? A. Yes. You may use a loose leaf binder or more permanent binding method such as a machine attached binding strip. The document(s) will be reviewed by several committees and the School Dean and must be bound to ensure security. Page 25
Q: Should the cover sheet be inserted in the bound document? :Q: Should the cover sheet be inserted in the bound document? A. Yes. The applicant should complete the top portion of the cover sheet, sign it, duplicate it and insert the copy as the first item in Section I of the document. The original Cover sheet (with your original signature) should be placed in a clasped envelope in the inside pocket of the binder or clipped to the bound document for signaturizing by the reviewing committees and inclusion with their recommendations. Q: How many letters of reference are needed? :Q: How many letters of reference are needed? A: There is no required number of references for promotion, tenure or third-year review packets. However, applicants should make certain that their packets include references from colleagues, peers and students who are in a position to attest to their performance in the various areas being evaluated (teaching, research, scholarship and service.) A: Detailed information on professional meetings attended by applicants is included on the curriculum vita and need not be verified by copies of programs; however, you may want to include copies of papers presented (if available in an edited form) and/or follow-up correspondence related to the presentation. Third-Year Review. Materials covering period since the initial appointment.
Tenure. Materials covering period since the beginning
of tenure track appointment.
Promotion. Materials covering period since initial
appointment or most recent previous promotion as

A: Yes. The present Handbook does not preclude a faculty member from applying for promotion and/or tenure before the required date and, if denied, reapplying at the appropriate time. Page 31
