Story = narrative, a tale, a report, an account But – not a robot-sounding grocery list of events! There always a reason why we tell a story. Seven Elements of Digital Stories : Seven Elements of Digital Stories Element 1: : Element 1: Point of view First person point of view uses words such as I, me, we, us, my, mine more personal context increased attention more authoritative Third person point of view story is about someone else or narrator referring to him/herself as another person uses words such as he, she, they, him, her, them more neutral and distant; not as powerful Element 2: : Element 2: Dramatic Question Tension from the beginning that holds you until the story is over Highest tension before the end is called the “climax” Element 3: Emotional Content : Element 3: Emotional Content Emotional issues: death, loss, love, loneliness, confidence, weakness, acceptance, rejection More powerful content Holds audience’s attention Element 4: the gift of your voice : Element 4: the gift of your voice Script = written form of digital story, written the way you talk, not meant to be read silently Your voice = part of who you are Reading v. reciting (performing) Feedback is important Element 5: the power of the soundtrack : Element 5: the power of the soundtrack Instrumental music is best, can help tell your story Sets the mood (feeling) Element 6: economy : Element 6: economy Much of the story told with images Digital story: small number of images, short text Limits: 1 page of text double spaced 10 images Time -- no longer than three minutes Element 7: pacing : Element 7: pacing How fast or slow you tell the story (your voice, the images) True secret of successful storytelling Rhythm keeps audience’s interest.
