Fulfilled by Jesus Galatians 4:4-5. Hebrews 2:14-15. Genesis 22:18 Prophesied all nations would be blessed through one special descendant or seed of Abraham. Jews and Gentiles alike are blessed when they accept Jesus a descendant of Abraham as their Savior. Matthew 1:1. Galatians 3:16-24. Genesis 49:10 Prophesied Shiloh (the Messiah) would come from Judah. Jesus was a descendant of Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Luke 3:33 Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah told King Ahaz, and the people of Judah, that God himself would give them a sign or miracle. He then recorded it in Isaiah 7:14-16. Isaiah said an "almah," would become pregnant and give birth to a son who would be called Immanuel. "Almah" refers to a virgin, or an unmarried young woman who was expected to be a virgin until after she was married. He also said that both the kings Ahaz feared, would be gone before the baby boy was old enough to chose between right and wrong Slide 7: Isaiah 7:14 also predicted the birth of the Messiah. It prophecied that a "almah" or virgin would conceive and give birth to a baby boy who would be called Immanuel. The second and greater fulfillment of this prophecy occured when Jesus was born. When Jesus was born an "almah" in this case "virgin" conceived and gave birth to a son who was called among other things "Immanuel." Mathew 1:18-25. For a virgin to give birth is a miracle or sign. It is no miracle for a young woman to conceive and give birth, but it is a miracle or sign for a virgin to conceive and give birth. Jesus's virgin birth was the sign or miracle God promised in Isaiah 7:14. Slide 8: Gabriel Visits Mary The Birth of Jesus Foretold – Luke 1: 26-38 26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." 34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" 35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[c] the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37For nothing is impossible with God." 38"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. Slide 9: Holy Conception an Birth The Birth of Jesus 18-19The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced. 20-23While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—'God saves'—because he will save his people from their sins." This would bring the prophet's embryonic sermon to full term: Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for "God is with us"). 24-25Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God's angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus. Slide 10: 30 Years of lessons and miracles Healer Matt 4:23-2423 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. Slide 11: Matt 8:28-3428 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts. Slide 12: Matt 20:29-3429 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him. 51And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Arrest in the Garden Slide 17: 53Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 55In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 56But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. 57And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Matthew 26: 45-57 Slide 18: The Crucifixion Crucifixion was an ancient method of execution in which the victim's hands and feet were bound and nailed to a cross. It was one of the most painful and disgraceful methods of capitol punishment. Victims were usually beaten and tortured and then forced to carry their own cross to the crucifixion site. The Roman cross was formed of wood, typically with a vertical stake and a horizontal cross beam near the top. Different types and shapes of crosses existed for different forms of crucifixion. The Roman form of crucifixion was not employed in the Old Testament by the Jewish people, as they saw crucifixion as one of the most horrible, cursed forms of death (Deuteronomy 21:23). In New Testament Bible times, the Romans used this tortuous method of execution as a means of exerting authority and control over the population. Before nailing the victim to the cross, a mixture of vinegar, gall and myrrh was usually offered to alleviate some of the victim's suffering. Wooden planks were usually fastened to the vertical stake as a footrest or seat, allowing the victim to rest his weight and lift himself for a breath, thus prolonging suffering and delaying death for up to three days. Unsupported, the victim would hang entirely from nail-pierced wrists, severely restricting breathing and circulation. This excruciating ordeal would lead to exhaustion, suffocation, brain death and heart failure. At times, mercy was shown by breaking the victim's legs, causing death to come quickly. As a deterrent to crime, crucifixions were carried out in highly public places with the criminal charges posted on the cross above the victim's head. Slide 19: Fact of Crucifixtion First the Romans “scourged” the victim: while the victim was tied to a pillar, soldiers would strike him with whips that had pieces of bone or metal inserted in the leather. This had the effect of stripping the flesh off a person’s body, piece by piece. After this, he had to carry the transverse beam of the cross (the patibulum) to the execution site, but only if the cross being used was a t or T type — the vertical pole was always left in place to be re-used over and over. If there wasn’t enough wood for large-scale executions, a simple cross (crux simplex) of just a single stake was likely used. Beaten Slide 20: Once at the execution site, the victim would be nailed through the hands (or wrists) and feet. If he put his weight on a small shelf (sedile) below his feet, enough pressure was applied to the chest that made breathing difficult to impossible. Pulling and pushing oneself up, though, greatly increased the pain in both feet and hands. The victim would thus be left like this, desperate to find an even moderately tolerable position, for as long as was necessary for them to die — usually from suffocation. Afterwards, the body would be left to rot until it fell from the cross. Nailed to the cross Slide 21: The Resurrection Christian faith is based on the actual resurrection on Jesus Christ. This resurrection is where Jesus was in human form and he was brought back from death to live forever. Jesus' resurrection proves to us in no certain terms that God has complete power over death. Whether you believe it or not, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important historical event that has ever occurred in the world. The Bible tells us that we can have the same spirit in us as the Spirit of Him that raised Jesus from the dead. This is God's resurrection plan. He desires for us to follow in Jesus' footsteps to include going through our own resurrection resulting in eternal life. See below for Biblical advice and commentary concerning the resurrection of Jesus. Slide 22: The Promises of the resurrection Forgiveness of all sins Gift of The Holy Spirit Promise of an afterlife Guarantee of Salvation Slide 23: All of this lead to the reason for celebrating Christmas The Birth of Jesus Leads to Eternal Salvation John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
